Scenario:
Almost every night since 20 February, I have been receiving very late night phone calls on my cell phone. Very late...often 3am, sometimes 1 am, but always after midnight. The caller says absolutely nothing...no heavy breathing, no words....nothing. The display on my phone reads "Private Number". I do not like to turn my cell phone off at night because (a) my father has been gravely ill in the U.S. and I want to be able to be reached if needed, (b) my land line is not 100% reliable all of the time, and (c) I need to be reached for my job, if needed. I have spoken to our telephone service folks and they tell me that they cannot trace a private number; I have reported this to our security officers. I know I can change my number, but if this caller is someone that I thought I knew and trusted (but somehow misjudged), I will likely be giving that person my new number as well. Changing numbers is a real hassle and I cannot be sure that I won't still have the problem. I am losing sleep, I am annoyed, and I want to stop this. Would you
(A) change numbers and give your new number to all your current contacts
(B) simply turn phone off at night and hope nobody back home needs to reach you
(C) continue to hang up on the caller and hope that he will soon tire of this game (some nights I receive 4 or 5 such calls, so my sleep is interrupted even if I hang up immediately)
or (D) something else....please advise

I turn mine off when I go to bed. I understand about your father, but even if something were to happen to him, there is nothing you could do at that particular moment anyway except lose more sleep.

This person is clearly annoying you and understandably so so why not turn the tables on them? I'd get a whistle similar to what referees use in sports and each time the person says nothing, blow the whistle down the phone until they hang up. Trust me, if they value their hearing, they will get fed up and quit harrassing you. I hope this helps hug

I had the same thing happen to me last year.

Haven't heard from them again. It's probably a jealous ex.

I think I would change the number Jeff and hope that whoever is calling is not someone to whom you would be passing on your new number.

It is a hassle I know, I've had a similar experience, fortunately the calls stopped when the number was changed.

Good luck!

I hate that some people seem to take bizarre pleasure in messing in peoples lives... I'd change my phone number... have you tried to talk to the person, maybe say... I don't know why you're doing this to me... have I done something to you? Who knows you could get a response, if not change your number.

A whistle! That's a great idea! Might need to warn my apartment neighbors, though laugh but it IS a good idea.
Thanks!

hi sweetie

well ya got me but make sure you arent getting charged for em!

ive been called by telemarketers at 10 and 11 pm recently
they just start chirping away even tho i say
"DO YOU KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS?!"
and i have to interrupt and say it again
then they say oh i am sorry-and go on
w/ whatever they are trying to read from their script...

after i repeat myself yet again i ask where they are calling from-
what company is this that calls people so late in the night?
and they say sorry we are calling from india-
its so and so time here...

i say im sorry but this is not appropriate to call me
at this hour and i hang up--

many times i get calls that have a long pause at the beginning of a recording before the spiel and they come in at all hours also

i would guess its sales-and inept management behind it.

dont answer if its private?

did i say hiiiiiwave

Yes, I looked into that option, Des, but calls that are routed through our embassy come through as UNKNOWN number (as opposed to PRIVATE number) and if I block the private number, I also will be blocking the unknown...job-related....which I cannot do.
But, it was definitely a thought. Thanks!

That's fine but many people opt not to send their number when they call for valid reasons. Many of Jeff's contacts may fall into this category.

I generally do not engage the caller at all, but last night I said, "You are the one paying for these calls, so I'll stay on as long as you wish." I then said nothing more, set the phone down on the nightstand, and waited. He stayed on for over 9 minutes with complete silence (on his side, as I heard nothing, and on mine). I don't pay for incoming calls, so I thought maybe I'd hit him where it hurts most...the wallet!
But, it didn't dissuade him...got my call tonight, right before I posted my thread (it is now 1:30am here).
Thanks for your thoughts.

Well I was thinking more about a guilt trip, doesn't work very often but every once in a while... There is a guy here on the forums and when he first started he basicly attacked everything I said with a rude comment, after a few times I posted back... "what is it about me that you don't like?" he never answered that post, but has been an absolute sweetheart to me ever since. So it might be worth a try to appeal to his better nature... everyone has one somewhere deep inside.

I don't know if you already do.. but when you see it says 'Private call' (at that hour).. don't speak or make a sound when you pick up the phone.

Hearing your voice even saying helloo is enuff to let them know they are bothering you.. and they get a result 'Contact' with you straight away.. regardless of what happens next.

I TOTALLY agree with Noel.. I've had to do this before.

DEAFEN them Jeff..

I dunno where you live in regards to neighbours.. Don't tell any of them .. incase it's them.. or they (accidently) tell 'The person' what you are planning.

Just blow the HELL out of that whistle..

and when the neighbours mention it the next day.. say ' Hmm yeah I heard that too'.. confused

I'm sure you would only have to do it a few times.

BUTTT.. be on your guard for them to do it back to you as pay back... so be careful.. we kinda LIKE you with ear drums.

Quite possibly someone who has just stumbled
across your number.
First option has to be (A), if that doesnt work
consider B,C&D. and of course you will then
know your mystery caller is aquainted with you.

Good luck

Good point, Claire. They could retaliate doh I wonder if the police deal with nuisance calls. There must be some procedure in place to deal with freaks like that confused
