I just ran a thread asking for romantic movie suggestions and no one mentioned "A Beautiful Mind".

I'm surprised.

To me, this is the most beautiful story of love, devotion and faith I have ever seen. Moreover it is a true story so it has a serious human interest element to it.

People probably don't think of this as a "romantic" movie because it's not the type of romance that people tend to dream about. They prefer the fairytale love story crap.

The unwavering love that Alicia Nash had for John Nash is awesome.

That's the kind of love I dream of. Forget the fairytale crap. Give me the real thing. Someone who will stand by you and have faith in you no matter what.

Anyone else see this movie? I just watched it last night. I think it's an awesome true love story. It's about Alicia's Nash's love for John, it's not your normal romance flick. I cried at several places during the movie. Yeah, I'm like that.

Although, I think a big part of my sentimental emotions had to do with the fact that I knew it was a true story.

To me, this is what REAL love is all about.

Great movie.....watched it about three times.....pretty intense.....unconditional love....but yet sensible and practical... she stood strong by his side and left physically when necessary but not in heart....

But if you read the book you will find the reality of his life differed remarkably from the movie....If it made you cry, however, just steer clear of the book and enjoy the movie ......

No....read the book...it is so much more real than the movie.

I loved the book first, then could not watch the movie all the way through...they turned the book into a romance... which I guess is easier to bear....

I would actually like to read the book. Not sure if a book would be a tear though. Reading a book just isn't the same as watching actors and actresses play out the parts.

Some of the scenes that brought a tear to my eye were the following:

1. When Alicia when into the bathroom to get a drink of water and broke the glass and mirror screaming with the agony of frustration. The thought of leaving the man she loved was totally out of the question to her, yet staying by his side was pure hell. To me that scene perfectly depicted the depth of her unconditional love, not for a romantic lover, but for another human being that she could not desert.

2. After John had gone back to the campus and tried to fit in but had a terrible bout with his schizophrenia he went home and told Alicia that it wasn't going to work and that he would resign himself to going back to the hospital. But instead of accepting that Alicia held out her hand to him and simply said, "Try again tomorrow".

3. When John went into the dinning hall that he had always avoided and all his colleagues presented him with their pens. They were showing their respect, not for what he had done in mathematics, but for what he had done on their campus in the face of his battle with schizophrenia.

4. At the Nobel Prize ceremony when John gave full credit to Alicia for everything he had ever accomplished. Hell, they should have been giving the Nobel Prize to HER!

I'm sure that Ron Howard (the producer and director) romanticized the schizophrenia for the sake of making the movie entertaining. There's nothing romantic about schizophrenia. It's a terrifying mental disorder.

My very best childhood friend became schizophrenic in this early 30's. His wife dropped him like a hot potato. She talked about him like he was nothing more than garbage that needed to be taken out and set by the curb for pick-up by the trash collectors. So much for wedding vows. "In sickness and in health?". Yeah right. As long as it's nothing more than a common cold I suppose. It was like she blamed him for being schizophrenic. Like as if he had a choice.

To me the movie was more about Alicia Nash's love for John than it was about John himself. It was also about her recognition that his disease was not his fault. She clearly saw that he was a victim of the disease and not the disease itself.

I'd like to read the book someday. I was just commenting on the movie here, not to imply that is was necessarily accurate to the real life story. I just found it to be one of the best movies I've ever seen. But then I like reality-based human-interest stories.

My former neighbor (and briefly boyfriend one summer) grew up schizophrenic, and ended up going off his meds and murdering 5 people in one day in my home town last fall. The police and the press vilified him incredibly, calling him a "monster" whom they were going to make pay for what he did, like he had any concept of, or control over, his actions.

Fortunately he is in a mental hospital now, where he belongs.

Abra ...are you familiar with movie ... "Pollock"?

Unfortunately no. As much as I like human interest stories I don't watch a lot of movies. I need a good woman encourage me to watch them. :o)

I don't have schizophrenia or any other mental disorders to deal with so the woman could have a sane lover too! That would make for a really romantic real life story.

Well, I do have multiple personalities, but my doctor said that they are well-ordered so they don't qualify as a disorder. ;o)

I can turn my personalities on and off at will, just like I can turn my woman on and off at will. My parents should have named me Will, but alas they named me James.

I'll see if I can find "Pollock" at my library or through interlibrary loan.
