Haven't had a good religious thread in a while. So I thought I'd throw this one in.

Elohim is the Plural form of Eloah in hebrew. Which none of us here can accurately read. In most English translations of the Bible (e.g. the King James Version), the letter G in "god" is capitalized in cases where Elohim refers to the God of Israel, but there is no distinction between upper and lower case in old Hebrew text.

Genesis 31:30-34. Laban had caught up to Jacob and demanded of him: "But why did you steal my gods?" Jacob replied "But if you find anyone who has your gods, he shall not live" although he didn't know that Rachel had taken the gods. Here we have Jacob recognizing Laban's gods

Exodus 20:3 (The first commandment): You shall have no gods before me. The gods of other nations are recognized, and the same in the next 2 quotes

Exodus 31:14 Do not worship any other god, for the LORD (Yahweh), whose name is Jealous, is a jealous god.

Exodus 23:24-25 Do not bow down before their gods or worship them or follow their practices. You must demolish them and break their sacred stones to pieces. Worship the LORD (Yahweh) your god...

Deut. 10:17 For the LORD (Yahweh) your god is god of gods and lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, Yahweh is the chief god, like Zeus

1 Sam 5:2-3 Then they carried the ark into Dagon's temple and set it beside Dagon. When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD (Yahweh). Here is one of a number of competitions between Yahweh and the other gods showing that Yahweh is greater, but in so doing recognizing the other gods.

Exodus 12:12 'For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments--I am the LORD.

Gen 1:1 In the begining Elohim (the gods) created the heaven and the earth."
The plural, Elohim, is used.

To see that this refers to an assembly of gods look at:

Gen 1:26 Then Elohim (gods) said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness..."

Gen 3:22 And the LORD God (Yahweh-Elohim) said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil."

So man has become like one of the gods, as pointed out by Yahweh to the assembly of other gods.

Remember Elohim is a plural word. "im" being a masculine and plural suffix.

I challenge anyone to re read the bible without the preconcieved notion that it is a Monothiestic book.

Put personal faith aside for ONE MOMENT, and read it literally. How would you exlplain these verses?

I think 'God' can be interpreted as 'leader' and there have been many leaders throughout history which mankind have worshipped and looked up to.... it is in the nature of man to worship... if it isn't a 'god' its material wealth, fame, alcohol/drugs whatever.... but there is only one creator... there can be only one.. cause if it were more than one.. there would have been a committee... and nothing would have got done laugh

cheers

Like Congress in the states....rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing Good post.

It seems (if read literally) there was some sort of committee of Gods in Genesis. And like any committee, they screwed up. Yahweh being the "chairman"

Genesis 6:6 “The LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.”

I'm hoping for a real academic discussion here, and not a "you're going to hell" or "there is no God" type thread.

Oh Goose you've just been waiting until I was feeling better to taunt with such things doh

Actually if you reread some of those in full, they abolish the idea that other Gods should be "worshipped". They believe that there is only one "true God" which makes it a monotheistic book.

I myself will continue to look at the bible as a novel written by men in order to control the masses. I will continue to thank the heavens, the moon, the stars, the sun and the earth for all the things that they provide me with in order to sustain my life as a human being so that my soul can fulfill it's need and purpose here on earth.

Great thread hon thumbs up bouquet

I disagree. Though the worshiping of other gods is abolished and made sinful, the other Gods were still recognized as existing according to scripture.

Though those who "believe" were monothiest (one god), the other Gods were still there. Polythiest(many gods).

And the Bible doesn't say that everyone believed in just Yahweh. Kind of interesting to think about. That all the Dogma could be wrong if you re read the Bible in a litteral sense.

Ok then explain:

j_goose71: Genesis 31:30-34. Laban had caught up to Jacob and demanded of him: "But why did you steal my gods?" Jacob replied "But if you find anyone who has your gods, he shall not live" although he didn't know that Rachel had taken the gods. Here we have Jacob recognizing Laban's gods

It is repeatedly said throughout as well as lectured and pounded into the brains of most that read and believe everything that is written in there. No matter what version, be it King James or other variations it is said that anyone who has other Gods shall not live. I do find it quite funny though in an ironic way that this "But if you find anyone who has your gods, he shall not live" is said the way it is. If you really read and interpret that first part, it is actually saying that we all have our own interpretation of God and we should not be using someone elses God. Granted it's all in the eyes of the interpreter but quite funny.

It must recognize them to some degree as it states..."thou shall worship no other god but me"....there has to be other gods to worship otherwise this statement would be irrelevent!!!!!!!!!!

I think it goes with this one....

Deut. 10:17 For the LORD (Yahweh) your god is god of gods and lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome," Yahweh is the chief god, like Zeus

And the "jealous God" scripture. Yahweh just wanted all the Glory for himself and none to the other gods. So strike fear in man with threats of eternal damnation and they'll give up on the other gods who seemed "less powerful."

I have my own vews on the Bible which I'll keep to myself for now. (I intend to keep this as academic as possible)

This is why I laugh when I read most of the things that come out of this book. I can tell you for a fact that Zeus never considered himself "chief" of the Gods and Godesses for that matter if you really want to put this in it's true perspective. Yes he was a God amongst Gods, but he never claimed to be the most powerful.

All anyone has ever done over the years is used that book for a means to "strike fear in man with threats of eternal damnation". A good majority of people in society believe that God is this fierce monster that only loves you "if". I won't get into where that road leads down because that will take us off the book topic and onto religions in general.

The Old and New Testament denies the existence of other Gods as far as which God you should surrender yourself to. It does acknowledge(not recognize) other Gods, but uses fear for you to not believe in an alternate spirituality. The whole book is a way for you to find an external source to save yourself. We can only save ourselves because we are a part of God(Source). The Old Testament would have us believe otherwise. I do like the teachings of Jesus in the New Testament, but other stuff in the Bible is very misleading for purposes that I will not touch right now. I will say this about the book of Proverbs as well as the Bible, half is pure and divine wisdom, and the other is construed info implemented by men in order to achieve a purpose that would stick in the collective unconscious of the masses: Proverbs 1:7 "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction." I highlighted the bs and would replace it with knowing and loving yourself is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and learning.
I concur with Serenity's posts on this issue as well(interpretations)....kinda strange in some wayshmmm

I think the ideas an expressions of the old testament were a reflection of the simplicity and naivety of the times.. the words were spoken in a language that they (at that time) could understand.. found an interesting passage tonight that I liked...

Acts...

God, who made the world and everything in it, since he is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. nor is he worshiped with mens hands, as though he needed anything since he gives all to all life, breath, and other things. And he has made from one blood, every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings. so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for him and find him, though his is not far from each one of us; for in him we live and move and have our being, as also some of our poets have said "we are also his offspring"

This passage rings a truth with me..
