Okay, hypothetically, if Obama wins the democratic nomination, and, hypothetically, wins the presidential election, is it possible for race to become a non-issue and that he will be judged on his performance alone? That is, will he ever be just the president, or will he always be the black president?
Looking for thoughtful, considered, fair, and reasonable replies--Thanks

I believe race will always be an issue in this country. In N.C. 92% of blacks voted for O'Bama. Do you really believe that wasn't based on skin color?? 92% of Americans are never in ageement on anything

Well, at least Bush was bad and seems less clever than Obama. So, i guess people will have to consider that cleaning Bush's trash will not be an easy task. So, luckily there was a VERY BAD president before the black one
fireliter: what troubles me is how quiet the republicans are.
imagine if the voters stick to their gender and race and vote according to fact fact alone. scares the bejesus outta me
I think that if Colin Powell had run for president, years ago, and had won, that his race would have not been that much of an issue...because maybe it has more to do with the man than the race...?

That's not going to happen, and you know it. 92% of the whites in this country are never going to vote for the white candidate solely based on color. The republicans are being quiet about the gender/race issue simply because it's a non-issue. There are way too many actual policy issues to focus on.

he would have gotten my vote. he displayed character throughout his time in the limelight.
my thoughts for the democrats is this, the"commander in chief "is the most important position that needs to be filled in the coming elections the rest of the issues are the responsibility of our legislative branch of government.

For me if he wins he will be the president. I hate it, that in our day and age people still focus on nationalities.

Is it possible that even if Americans try to get past it and focus on the issues and the man, rather than his race, the international media would continue to focus on it?
As a Newly elected Bahamian Primeminister once pointed out when asked about all those Deep changes that were about to happen:"Same Horse,Different Rider!!"

I think this is a silly question. People who vote based on race or gender shouldn't be allowed to vote. Or have children. Or drive.
Obama represents a chance to bring new life to the democratic party by giving hope that change is possible to an entire generation, or two. He does not accomplish this by being a specific skin color.

I don't think you have understood the question. Who will vote or has voted for whom is not the question, nor is why someone might or might not vote for a candidate, based on any criteria; in fact, the question has nothing to do with voting at all, but, rather, with perception, i.e., public persception of the man who is president and if his race will color that perception in any way, as it seems to, so far, at least from media reports, have colored the perception of him as a candidiate.
Of course, your second paragraph makes much sense.
