TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn' t get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags..

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank Kool-aid made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because,

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or chat rooms.......

WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good !

And Smoky...

You are so right about how it was to grow up before. My daughter is 13 - and lives her life in front of the TV - PC and an evetual break is because she sends sms from her cellphone...

And funny enough she loves to hear about all the crazy things I did when I was her age like:

Building caves in the forest - climbing trees in the policestation court ( and getting caught) - taking my little brother out in a long rope from our house (2. floor of course)- knocking windows 2. floor with a homemade scarecrow - painting my mum and dads kitchen orange and blue with metallic paint - etc......

I tell her that if I was 13 today I would die of boredom - or maybe I would do the same as I did before. Sometimes I want to do stuff like that again even now laugh

I feel pity for the youth - I cannot tell her: "do this and do that" since the whole point was that my parents did`nt know about it. (Except for the kitchen and the policestation - and they were MAD!!!)

Those were the dayshead banger

For the 100th time now .... take my advice ... Do not make rash judgements on other people! I never ever make fun of myself - I am a very serious person. I only make fun of funny people, small children, and defenceless old people.

Dear Smoky, this is called FAS, and this is no fun. As you read about it you will start recognising them.

Cheers to everyone.

Dear Marivanna, Foetal Alcohol Syndrome is easily recognisable, but I dont see many folk from the generations of the 30`s to the 70`s suffering from this .... in fact there were very few hard drinkers or drug takers from those generations. I think the reason for not indulging nowadays is that the air is too polluted to enable to the body to cope with the mother also indulging, plus the fact that genetically bodies these days are far more fragile and sensitive.

FAS babies are a dime a dozen in the USA - in the Native American Population - from the alcohol freely supplied to them by the government - to keep them happy ... and quiet ... and diminish their population.

This thread is so true. I remember as a boy in the 70s getting picked up by the police on a dual carraigeway for hitch hiking. They took me home and my dad went ballistic with me, partly for the shame of having a policecar outside the house. don't know if people would care today.

As a teenager, I went out with my older brother and his friends one Saturday night, they all got almighty drunk, and the cops collected us all when we went swimming in the town lake, making a hell of a racket ..... took us to the policestation and called our parents to collect us. They all colluded with the cops, I later found out, and told them to keep us there as long as possible and then make us walk home...... about 12km all uphill! at 2 in the morning.... we were all SO hungry and thirsty and all the roadhouses were closed - and the milk delivery hadn`t yet begun so there wasn`t even any milk bottles to steal! (It was safe in those days in SA for kids to be about at night)

I had a friend born in the twenties, lived in Italy ..... and they never had things like Fleece or Thermal jackets, or snow boots/gloves - just a vest, cotton shirt, and regular jacket and normal walking/school shoes. Said they stuffed their shirts with straw and newspapers, and their shoes with newspapers and cardboard, to keep warm!!!! And their mamas gave them Zabaglioni to drink before setting off for school in the snow!!!! Wow, what a tough breed grew up in THOSE years?!!!
