HARARE (AFP) - Zimbabwe, grappling with a record 2.2 million percent inflation, has introduced a new 100-billion-dollar bank note in a bid to tackle rampant cash shortages, the central bank said Saturday.

The new note will go into circulation on Monday, the bank said in a statement cited by state media, joining about half a dozen new high denomination notes already issued this year.

In January, a 10-million-dollar note was issued, then a 50-million-dollar note in April. In May, notes for 100 million and 250 million dollars were issued, swiftly followed by those for five billion, 25 billion and 50 billion.

The southern African nation, currently gripped by a post-election crisis, has been ravaged by hyperinflation which shot up from 165,000 percent in February to 2.2 million in June.

Independent economists however believe the official inflation figure is grossly understated, estimating it could be running between 10 million and 15 million percent.

Zimbabwe's chronic economic crisis has left at least 80 percent of the population living below the poverty threshold and mass shortages of basic goods in shops.

Should we say "Enough, already!" ?

´twould be funny if it were not so tragic.

Years ago I was in Rio de Janiero. Briefly. Sailors are always anyplace briefly. On my way back to the ship at 4am I saw a woman begging in the street. We were leaving that day and I had some money left in my pocket (notes, not coins) so I gave it to her.

She spat on it and gave it me back........

Pride in clash with needs? Or a simple hate of foreigners better off? Or did you actually check if the notes were valid?

The notes were obviously of such low value she felt insulted! But hey it was four in the morning and dark.

Thing was there were coins in circulation,so I presumed that banknotes would have some value.......

Yes I have lived in Rhodesia, Zimbabwe/Rhodesia and Zimbabwe, without moving house.

Sad to say the Rhodesian dollar was once on parity with the British pound, and it looks as though that will never return unless the current dollar is revalued somewhat.

Not until the fat lady sings!

What actually happens is that people who lose entitlement to goods (farming produce) and those who lose entitlement to labour suffer differ consequences. I know this sounds a little opaque. In times of destitution, people who have something to trade with ie. land, harvest whatever are far better of than landless labourers - like the wage labourers of the urban centres. That is the essential difference.

This is an observation from Adam Smith's time to this century. These are facts, essentila facts of economics; these are not facts to decide whose throat to cut and all will be restored.

It is strange indeed that people from a rational democratic society always want to blame some people and have them removed rather than seeking to understand the way economies work. Such outrage is expressed..such false feeling is expressed.

Think about iy my friends; read up on your economics; slow down on your tempers - only 80 years ago the same thing happened in Europe. Hyperinflation was first defined in post ww1 germany; not in todays Zimbabwe. Think more, think of the global contex; real politic and sympathy - what we need is sympathy not anger.

Are you saying the Zim is needing a good strong Dictator to fix up the country? They cant get anything until their Despot stands down, or dies.

I dont see any anger here ...... just shrugs....dunno ... and comments ... about a country that used to be described as the "bread basket of Africa" ... that now no longer even has a loaf of bread available to feed their starving masses.

But wait .... Maybe George Bush will come to their rescue?!grin

I am quite frankly in a dilemna about this issue. Far too many things have entered the equation since Ian Smith's UDI happened over nearly 40 years ago and Britain abdicated its position in Rhodesia. The sixties were the years of independence of colonial Africa. Some corners prospered, others sank into a swamp.

I myself come from an ex colonial country which took 60 years to start shaping up. In my late teens and early twenties there were still only-white clubs, swimming pools and other preserves for whites. Did my blood boil at this? Yes, it did. I wanted to throughly destroy every remnant of colonial rule, I also saw that my countrymen were so avaricious and corrupt and I was left in a state of stasis. I cannot but admire Mugabe for his defiance againt Britain - remember Tito's defiance againt Stalin - and yet there is such suffering in the country.

What we have here are abstractions - some who seek ideas of democracy and a healthy population and some who seek total uprootment of a long long colonial heritage. But who are the movers and fixers? Brown and Bush and all the white farmers who were evicted in due fashion - those who had 80% of the most fertile land.

Regime change - Bush's philosophy, as loosely defined - cannot be done again. Not in Africa. What I hear about a new plan of transitional goverment has much to say for itself. If you have wondered about African leaders not intervening it is simply because that continent has been so thoroughly exploited and insulted and because of it dark vicious memories will persist for a long long time.

I recently read Matin Meredith's The State of Africa and two other books by Tim Jeal - Livingstone and Stanley. The truth of everything is in its history. Just taking about a dictator and a hungering poplace is far too shallow an analysis for any understanding of a people.

Most people who appear to have views about Zimbabwe or Africa havent the slightest clue why things are the way they are. People die, in their hundreds of millions all over the globe while others in the salons of the west feel that that keeps them in conversation.

I may have overstated my case but I simply do not like light conversation about people's sufferings.

Still light conversation in lack of deeper knowledge is better than total ignorance in the light of public awareness.

We can not fight all wars at all fronts, but we can support or offer an opinion.

And... I have fairly big hopes for African Union. It will take time, people will suffer but it is starting to take shape. That IS something new and positive.

Besides that,Obama is also Kenyan on his Fathers Side, and just maybe they'll listen more to one of their Own,than to any White Western Statesman.
Besides,Zimbabwe's Neighbors haven't done anything to resolve that Crisis except standing on the Sidelines Wringing their handsblues sigh frustrated

Spoken like a true European! The colour of a persons skin is not a major criteria in Africa... tis the particular tribe he belongs to, specifically the region he hails from, his family lineage, and what is commonly called his Surname, which denotes the amount of respect for his views and advice, and whether or not his Induna of his area is respected or not ..... hence the "wringing of hands" in anguish at the plight befalling them.

Maybe one day, like when the melted Poles have altered the axis of the earth and the continents as we know them have changed shape, then there shall be Peace on Earth in Africa. Or when those now being educated have educated their young who`ve educated their young and colonialism is to them what Van Rijbeeck/Vasco DeGama was to the colonialists ... then all shall be okay.sad flower

As it used to be in India, no way a simple cloth dyer could get an office job. It is changing rapidly there now. They still keep some of their values but they adapted many to move forward.

It will too in Africa, a lot faster than the poles melts.

It is surprisingly strong, the wind of changes when it finally bites. WITH education of course, but the very media we are using here and now is the strongest reason!!!

I cut my blah blah here.

Diplomats: Zimbabwe talks to get under way By MICHELLE FAUL, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 19 minutes ago

PRETORIA, South Africa - Diplomats say talks between Zimbabwe's ruling and opposition parties will soon get under way in South Africa's capital.

Tuesday's talks in Pretoria come a day after President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai agreed on the conditions to meeting. The talks aim to set up a power-sharing deal to end their country's crisis after a violent, widely condemned presidential runoff in June.

The diplomats say the negotiations will kick off with only mediators. They spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of angering their sources.

Parties to the Zimbabwean agreement have given themselves two weeks to complete negotiations. And they have signed a clause promising not to communicate about them with the media.
