I’ve written this from my male perspective, but you could equally apply this to the perspective of a woman looking for her ideal partner.
There are about 3 billion (3 000 000 000) women in the world. So, there must be plenty of women out there who’d be just right for me, and for whom I’d be just right? After all, "there's plenty of fish in the sea."
But only 30 million women live in my country.
And only 3 million of them live within 50 miles of me.
I’d be willing to consider anyone within quite a wide range of ages – say a 15 year lifespan. But that still means that about 55 out 70 women would be too young or too old. This leaves about 640 000.
I’d be too old or too young for 50% of them – which leaves 320 000.
A quarter of women smoke (I don’t) : 240 000.
10% of women are too tall or too short (I’m not very fussy over height) – leaving about 220 000.
I’m too short or too tall for about 30% of the remaining women – leaving 150 000.
About 40% of women either don’t want to have any children, or have enough already (I’d love to have more children) – leaving 90 000
About 75% of the women in my age and height range are not physically attractive to me: leaving 22 500. Maybe I’m being a bit fussy here?
I’d say I was about average looking – and I guess that 60% of women would really prefer someone who was better than average looking – down to 13 500.
About 80% of women in my age range are either married or in a relationship: 2 700 left.
75% of women have incompatible interests – sorry, but I’m not into watching TV all day, or horse-riding, or parachute jumping, or… Only 675 left now.
Eight out of ten women have either major personality faults or incompatible personalities with me: 67 women left.
10% are lesbians: 60 left.
So where are these 60 women? And if I ever meet one of them, there’s a 90% chance I wouldn’t realise that they were 1 of my 60…
After reading all this this I'd be to cross eyed to even look at a man.

alabamabebe: This is why I say most men are insane!
No, not insane, just realistic.
For example: you meet someone on the bus and exchange a few pleasantries. And then you never meet again. The meeting just wasn't in the right context for anything to develop...

Ever considered carrying cards with just your first name on and your mobile number?
That way you could just hand the card to any woman to whom you speak within your rigid criteria.
If she gets in touch you make a date, or if not at least you have salved your worried mind that you have tried.

arabella: Sounds familiar
I'm having cards made tomorrow Another idea is to make a poster with little "tear off" pieces with a phone number.
Like tradesmen do up here for snowplowing or handyman work.
Put a poster up in your local post office.
Yes but don't you have to put a price with those,
no no, that's something else they put in phone boxes!!!!
Makes me wonder with less and less phone boxes where do ladies put their cards?
I was out with a guy a few years ago and he went off to the gents and another guy at the bar was exchanging glances and smiles with me, I had cards at the time and was so tempted to slip him one, but thought that was just too bad!

hahaha...
I tell you what.. as time is knocking on.. I wouldn't rule out ever doing that myself
Maybe the "mathematics of love" just explains why:
so many people stay single for so long
so many marriages end in divorce
so many people are in relationships where their partner isn't ideal - sometimes they don't particularly love them - sometimes they do love them despite their partners not being ideal...
