Well, first off it wasn't my friend that was being hit, my friend, he was doing the hitting. In my eyes the only way to stop an atrocity is to do whatever it takes, especially if it involves children. Period. You are entitled to your opinion though, I'm not attempting to disprove anything, only a bit of sharing or perhaps connecting.

I'll just say this, have been on the inside and the outside of the situation. If you want out, there's always a way. If someone isn't ready, you can't make em leave. Best thing for the OP to do in this situation is to let the woman know what her options are and be supportive. Then stay outta it. Some women aren't open to being helped, if you try to get between her and the abusive man, she's likely to take his side. When she's ready, she'll find a way. You're sweet to care coolie, but if someone doesn't care for themselves, they're not going to let you do it.
