I am toying with the idea of perhaps visitng the States some time next year......

Can anyone recommend places over the Pond to visit? Is your neck of the woods worth a peek? I am keen to know the places to visit, things to see and do, and the weather at certain times of the year.....

I would be most eager to experience some of what the Native American culture has to offer. All ideas would be welcomed but I do need to avoid mosquitos where possible.

This is providing the riff-raff is allowed in, of course....!! roll eyes laugh

Thanks in advance, peeps..... cheers

Perhaps the Grand Canyon, the climate there shouldn't support many mosquitos as far as I know,

and I believe there is still a substantial native american influence in the area.

I have never been myself, so this is just a reccomendation of a location for you to look into.

If you're looking for Native American, I would visit New Mexico area. There are four states that touch exactly one anothers corners, it's called the four corners. Any way, there are a lot of places to visit and markets to experience. Also, go to Mesa Verde, that's a national park where you can visit cliff dwellings and such. It cost about $20 + to get in, but it's worth it. I've been twice.

Good luck.wave

Yes, Ship......... Florida is on my mental list and that cottage sounds wonderful. I will have a tight budget though and I would be interested to hear how good the public transport is as I'm not sure I am brave enough to drive on the wrong side of the road (with the steering wheel on the wrong side too!!)....
uh oh

Plenty of marinas and harbours would delight me no end, and boat trips....
Wey hey!!!!! yay My other love would be good restaurants.... its not ALL burgers, is it?

Thanks Ocee.... I do quite fancy the Grand Canyon. That's in the desert, isn't it? I have always had a fascination for the North American desert. And thanks for the info re. mosquitos.... very helpful, I shall check it out.

New Mexico sounds very interesting too..... I have had experience of the Native American culture when I lived in Canada, I'd love to re-kindle that spark, as it were........ thanks, love!!

Graham, if you could, love.... that would be most useful as I've always wanted to go to San Fransisco.... enjoy your trip, won't you?

Fab!!! Thanks so far, peeps!! teddybear

New Mexico is very different and hardly any mosquitoes at all. Santa Fe is beautiful. Carlesbad Caverns are a must and you can see all the alien stuff in Boswell. Lots of hot springs to visit too and waterfalls. The adobe buildings are very different from waht you see elsewhere too and lots of desert and cactus and such. Some beautiful scneic drives into the mountains outside Albuquerque too.

The southern states, I found were very humid and full of mosquitoes, such as Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky and Tennessee though the scenery was beautiful, especially the Alabama hills.wine

Don't worry, Bob, I am sure the cottage is available all year round so they will be able to accommodate you? Besides, there must be other cottages??

Gingerb.... that is sounding more enticing all the time, thanks. I think a tour is gonna be necessary, not just a visit to one place.

Assuming you'd be flying in.....start with NYC and then go south.

That way, you could see what a US city is like and then head toward Florida. grin

It's a huge place to explore. I've done sever trips lasting a month each and stilldon't feel I've even touched the tip of the iceberg. which remind me, I haven't been to Alaska yet... I hear it's clattered in huge mosquitoes though.

In New Mexico I went to a place with waterfalls comming out of hot springs that were 5,000 ft up and the water was warm, falling in to little pools that you could just relax in. Can't remember the name of the place now though. Maybe someone from there could help out with that. The native Americans in the north west were called Zuni and have an amazing culture. I spent hours talking to a medicine man there. They mine turquoise in NM too and they have shops specialising in selling it, in many attractive jewellery forms there. I think you'd like it in NM for the variety if nothing else.

rose,
Maine is great in the summer. We have one of the most beautifull coastlines on the planet but very little ocean beach opportunities. And the water is VERY cold. Not good for swimming really. And we have Maine lobster. All you can eat. You can drive from the coast to the mountains in one day. Fall foliage is great. There are wonderfull flyfishing opportunities. I can arrange for private lessions at a bare minumum of expense. The mosquitos. Well, your an adult. They probably couldn't fly off with you. If your coming in the winter and aren't interested in snomobiling or ice fishing or skiing than go else where. The only other thing to do is snuggle on the couch and watch movies and I'm sure you can do that at home. If your in Otisfield, Just stop the car and hollar. I'll hear you . Stop by for a beer

Forgot to tell you about the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe. It reputed to be the oldest in America and has that staircase in it made with no nails. There was a film made about it.

The chapel was built and had a balcony but apparnantly they forgot to make a staircase up to it. The space was so small that they couldn't build an ordinary staircase to it and prayed for a miracle.

One day a man called Joseph turned up who happened to be a carpenter and built a circular staircase using only the wood and no nails. It has no centre column and scientists say it defies gravity. It is still there to this day, though they have since built a guard rail along the side of it so people don't fall off.

This is the link to read about it.

The restaurants in NM are fantastic too, especially the Mexican food.

They are magical. I could see where you would be distracted.

Forgot to mention the artist's colonies and craft villages there too.

If you collect art or unusual pieces you'd be in Heaven.
