Stooie, in my humble opinion, Metallica (or the black album) was the last good thing they done!

Slayer are still kicking though!
its a never ending debate this one is it!! people say sell out blah blah blah.. i say fair juice to them, but apperantly the new album has an unforgiven 3 song... give the guy a break like!
stooie1971: JP - S & M is a class album..... and they did that before MTV Unplugged....and had the foresight to have an orchestra as backing..... genius!!!
Compare this to Bon Jovi's 'this far left feels right'
i often still wonder why they didnt do somethin with fade to black on s&m???? it wouldve been a perfect song to back with an orchestra... and its my fave tallicers song too!

Procol Harum and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra did it in '71. It's nothing new, and really there's very little in rock that is. Pretty much every rif, lick, drum beat has been done before, and a lot of it has been "borrowed" from blues, country and other frms of music.
I do like the first half of your list, but the second half isn't as raw or energetic, and the bass of Cliff Burton, who was innovative and had his own style, helped make Metallica what it used to be. Now they're a bunch of corpoarte monkeys on stage going for the cash, whining about people downloading their music and likely demanding only green jelly beans and red M&Ms. I lost all respect for them around the time their self titled or black album came out.
As far as the best heavy metal album goes, there are too many acts out there to really pick just one. A lot of diversity in what people consider heavy metal or classic rock. Where does each band really fit in, and why? I don't consider Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd to be heavy metal, yet many do, even though they're two of my favorites.
Abba are you on dope??? here's a list AC DC- Back in Black Van Halen- Van Halen Ozzy Osbourne - Diary of a mad man, Ultimate Sin , and etc. Deep Purple - Machine Head Led Zep- led Zep 1 Metallica- the black album Badlands - Badlands Guns and Roses- Appetite for destruction Black Sabbath- Mob Rules and others
