Many of us know are real names, so why do we use/need the handles, why not just use our names? (55)

No, it's allowed. Think when people first sign on, they are just apprehensive about putting their real names. Maybe the roots go back to CBer's? The original on-line, air, whatever.

Using first names makes talking to people on here more personal to me.
But to each his own.

When I first joined this site like i've done on other sites I don't use my real name only until I feel comfortable with doing so.I feel very comfortable here now.
