Yahoo has listed the top 10 affordable places to retire in the U.S. All are major metropolitan areas. What about us country boys?
Small communities within 1 to 1 1/2 hours of major shopping, not to hot, not cold. Rolling hills to mountains, trees, lakes, room for the dogs (and this "old dog" to roam. A garden and a shop to build the cars and motorcycles. A place to BBQ and invite a few people, crank up the stereo without bothering any neighbors. Closest neighbors about 5 acres away.
have a friend hes retired and has become a snow bird of sorts. He resides at his children's' places here in Michigan and down in Florida, he leases out his home which he owns outright. As he has said they both work alot of hours and cater to him like a King he only does what he wants when he wants.
Just thought it sounds so fantastic to me, to be retired and have a house staff to maintain and cook and entertain you.

I have the house staff anytime I want it. I simply prefer to do my own cleaning and cooking but I am considering getting someone to come in and do the deep cleaning a couple of times a month.
I am simply tired of being in a major metropolitan area, I am a country boy at heart that allowed to corporate world drag him to a city. The only reason I am still here is so there is medical services for mom close by.
When my time comes, I simply want to crawl up a mountain and lay down. None of this hospital & doctor crap every week for me..
Interesting how nobody has any ideas on stuff like this..

Hey dude! Check out Costa Rica. Still fairly reasonable and great weather, sun, and beaches. Plus the fishing!
I want to retire in Georgia or the Carolinas. Lately, I've been falling more & more in love with the Savannah area! All that historical architecture, the beach nearby, the southern cooking, & from what I understand, there's pretty much to do there too!

Savannah is very nice. And you have the Florida beaches and Jeckyll Island, Georgia right nearby.
How many can afford to retire? I get the feeling if things keep going the way they are, a lot of people will be eating cold Alpo while sleeping in a homeless shelter.

I know first-hand! I lived in Biloxi/Gulfport, MS when I was little. We still call it home. I always wanted to retire there, but ever since Katrina Hit the Gulf Coast, I've kinda changed the location....
