Oh...another one was the night my husband died, someone played "The Dance" by Garth Brooks...3 times...and I cried each time, it was so appropriate. And I had never heard it before that night.
The Dance
Looking back on the memory of The dance we shared 'neath the stars alone For a moment all the world was right How could I have known that you'd ever say goodbye
And now I'm glad I didn't know The way it all would end the way it all would go Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain But I'd of had to miss the dance
Holding you I held everything For a moment wasn't I a king But if I'd only known how the king would fall Hey who's to say you know I might have chanced it all
And now I'm glad I didn't know The way it all would end the way it all would go Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain But I'd of had to miss the dance
Yes my life is better left to chance I could have missed the pain but I'd of had to miss the dance
I was coming to the end of a long long walk When a man crawled out of a cardboard box Under the E. Street Bridge Followed me on to it I went out halfway across With that homeless shadow tagging along So I dug for some change Wouldn't need it anyway He took it lookin' just a bit ashamed He said, You know, I haven't always been this way
I've had my moments, days in the sun Moments I was second to none Moments when I knew I did what I thought I couldn't do Like that plane ride coming home from the war That summer my son was born And memories like a coat so warm A cold wind can't get through Lookin' at me now you might not know it But I've had my moments
I stood there tryin' to find my nerve Wondering if a single soul on Earth Would care at all Miss me when I'm gone That old man just kept hanging around Lookin' at me, lookin' down I think he recognized That look in my eyes Standing with him there I felt ashamed I said, You know, I haven't always felt this way
I've had my moments, days in the sun Moments I was second to none Moments when I knew I did what I thought I couldn't do Like the day I walked away from the wine For a woman who became my wife And a love that, when it was right, Could always see me through Lookin' at me now you might not know it But I've had my moments
I know somewhere 'round a trashcan fire tonight That old man tells his story one more time He says
I've had my moments, days in the sun Moments I was second to none Moments when I knew I did what I thought I couldn't do Like that cool night on the E. Street Bridge When a young man almost ended it I was right there, wasn't scared a bit And I helped to pull him through Lookin' at me now you might not know it Oh, lookin' at me now you might not know it But I've had my moments
I was listening to the radio one day and heard this song being played. As I listened to the words being song it made me think of my late husband which brought tears to my eyes.I googled for this song on You Tube and must've played this song over and over many times.
"To Where You Are" by Josh Groban
Who can say for certain Maybe you’re still here I feel you all around me Your memories so clear
Deep in the stillness I can hear you speak You’re still an inspiration Can it be (? ) That you are mine Forever love And you are watching over me from up above
Fly me up to where you are Beyond the distant star I wish upon tonight To see you smile If only for awhile to know you’re there A breath away’s not far To where you are
Are you gently sleeping Here inside my dream And isn’t faith believing All power can’t be seen
As my heart holds you Just one beat away I cherish all you gave me everyday ’cause you are mine Forever love Watching me from up above
And I believe That angels breathe And that love will live on and never leave
Fly me up To where you are Beyond the distant star I wish upon tonight To see you smile If only for awhile To know you’re there A breath away’s not far To where you are
I know you’re there A breath away’s not far To where you are

arabella: Isn't that something....
I have a Gordon Lightfoot song I love too and I don't hear it very often.
It's called "Approaching Lavender".
Yes, I know that one also, Arabella. I know most of Gordon Lightfoot's and they're all wonderful!! I have his songs on vinyl even...!! And I particularly like "The Circle is Small"....

And who can forget "Comes a Horseman" and "Rainy Day People"?
Yep, Gord's good!
There are several songs that've stopped me in my tracks over the years - Watching the video of The Cactus Cuties singing The Star Spangled Banner will give any patriotic American goosebumps and Chris LeDoux's song "You Just Can't See Him From the Road" still puts a lump in my throat even though it's not a sad song.

Whenver I hear Gordon's songs, it always takes me back to my time in The Rockies...... Ahhh....!!!
Should that be so? Its that kinda music isn't it? Hi ya, Don!!

Hi Ali!
Yep, too true! Oddly enough though, I associate Gordon Lightfoot more with the Plains than the Rockies - probably because I grew up on the Plains of Western Kansas and listened to him quite a bit in my "formative years."
John Denver, on the other hand, has become such an integral part of the Rocky Mountains for me that, when back-packing, I would often seem to hear his music playing even when the nearest radio/tape player was 50 miles away!
It's kinda' neat how you can hear a song and be almost magically transported back to a specific time and place. Clint Black even had a song that mentioned it:
"Ain't it funny how a melody Can bring back the memories? 'Take you to another place and time And even change your state of mind..."
Hmmm... And I think I went back to Texas for a moment just thinking about the song!
1994 driving home from the beach... listening to a college radio station that played "What would you say" by the Dave Mathews Band... I pulled over at the first music store went in and bought the cassette tape.
---and my favorite song of all time, that still stops me in my tracks everytime I hear it... Louis Armstrong, What a wonderful world.
bodleing: Have you ever heard a song for the first time that made you stop everything you were doing, and listen. Do you remember it and what you were doing? I remember arriving at a friends house in my car when Blue Monday by New Order came on the radio. I was totally transfixed and had to listen to the full track, much to the consternation of my friend who had seen me arrive only to sit in the car for the next ten minutes or so.
Any songs had this effect on you at first time of hearing?

WOW... No wonder you were bowled over. Thanks for that one.
spicey1: I think everyone of these has stopped me in my tracks but there is one that will always make me cry......Taps
And one that will always make me cry happy tears, Lee Greenwood, Proud to Be an American
Elton John's original tribute to Marilyn Monroe....Candle in the Wind... I was driving and got a big lump in my throat because of the theme and the brilliance of the song!

Cantus In Memory of Benjamin Britten........... Incredibly beautiful music.
It consists only of a descending A minor scale, repeated over and over by violins and cellos. With a funeral bell.Brings tears to the eyes.
Just been on You Tube and read something really interesting.Because of the nature of the piece you can open two separate windows, start one playing and then a few seconds later start the other one.The two meld together into a fusion even more compelling and powerful than the original. Can´t think of any other piece of music that you could do that with.
When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary; When troubles come and my heart burdened be; Then, I am still and wait here in the silence, Until you come and sit awhile with me.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains; You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas; I am strong, when I am on your shoulders; You raise me up: To more than I can be.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains; You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas; I am strong, when I am on your shoulders; You raise me up: To more than I can be.
There is no life - no life without its hunger; Each restless heart beats so imperfectly; But when you come and I am filled with wonder, Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains; You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas; I am strong, when I am on your shoulders; You raise me up: To more than I can be.
