bodleing: Have you ever heard a song for the first time
that made you stop everything you were doing,
and listen. Do you remember it and what you
were doing?
I remember arriving at a friends house in my car
when Blue Monday by New Order came on the
radio. I was totally transfixed and had to listen
to the full track, much to the consternation of
my friend who had seen me arrive only to sit
in the car for the next ten minutes or so.

Any songs had this effect on you at first time of
hearing?

"i guess things happen that way", by johnny cash. i was having a divorce, after a long, really long marriage. was quite lost, drinking some whisky on the lemon (hey, it was cheap whisky). i realised, that, i will survive. and i did.

"Guess Things Happen That Way"

Well you ask me if I'll forget my baby.
I guess I will, someday.
I don't like it but I guess things happen that way.
You ask me if I'll get along.
I guess I will, someway.
I don't like it but I guess things happen that way.

God gave me that girl to lean on,
then he put me on my own.
Heaven help me be a man
and have the strength to stand alone.
I don't like it but I guess things happen that way.

You ask me if I'll miss her kisses.
I guess I will, everyday.
I don't like it but I guess things happen that way.
You ask me if I'll find another.
I don't know. I can't say.
I don't like it but I guess things happen that way.

God gave me that girl to lean on,
then he put me on my own.
Heaven help me be a man
and have the strength to stand alone.
I don't like it but I guess things happen that way.

The only one I really recall doing that was Meatloaf's Dead Ringer back in the years gone by. I was playing a game of darts and the video juke boxes had just come out. I heard this awesome powerful voice and just had to listen and watch. Been a Meatloaf fan ever since.

Yes. Most recently, this one.

I'M YOURS (JASON MRAZ)

Well you done done me and you bet I felt it
I tried to be chill but you're so hot that I melted
I fell right through the cracks
And now I'm trying to get back
Before the cool done run out
I'll be giving it my bestest
Nothing's going to stop me but divine intervention
I reckon it's again my turn to win some or learn some

I won't hesitate no more, no more
It cannot wait, I'm yours

Well open up your mind and see like me
Open up your plans and damn you're free
Look into your heart and you'll find love love love
Listen to the music of the moment maybe sing with me
I like peaceful melodys
It's your God-forsaken right to be loved love loved love love

So I won't hesitate no more, no more
It cannot wait I'm sure
There's no need to complicate
Our time is short
This is our fate, I'm yours

I've been spending way too long checking my tongue in the mirror
And bending over backwards just to try to see it clearer
But my breath fogged up the glass
And so I drew a new face and laughed
I guess what I'm saying is there ain't no better reason
To rid yourself of vanity and just go with the seasons
It's what we aim to do
Our name is our virtue

I won't hesitate no more, no more
It cannot wait I'm sure
There's no need to complicate
Our time is short
This is our fate, I'm yours

Well no no, well open up your mind and see like me
Open up your plans and damn you're free
Look into your heart and you'll find love love love love
Listen to the music of the moment come and dance with me
I like one big family (2nd time: I like happy family)
It's your God-forsaken right to be loved love love love

I won't hesitate no more
Oh no more no more no more
It's your God-forsaken right to be loved, I'm sure
There's no need to complicate
Our time is short
This is our fate, I'm yours

No I won't hesitate no more, no more

Wires by Athlete.
The song really gives the idea of the helplessness of having a seriously ill child.

Jacob's Dream by Alison Krauss

I cannot listen to that song without tears welling up, it just really kills me crying

Seal's Kiss from a Rose.

Didn't use to stop me in my tracks, no, I would drop everything and run for the tv. I hardly noticed Seal at first, the song was enchanting.

Still is.

Alison Krauss Jacob's Dream

In the spring of 1856 with the snow still on the ground
Two little boys were lost in the mountains above the town
The father went out hunting the boys had stayed behind
While mother tended to her chores they wandered from her side

The two had gone to follow him and lost their way instead
By dusk the boys had not been found and fear had turned to dread
200 men had gathered there to comb the mountain side
The fires were built on the highest peak in hopes they'd see the light

Oh mommy and daddy why can't you hear our cries
The day is almost over, soon it will be night
We're so cold and hungry and our feet are tired and sore
We promise not to stray again from our cabin door

Now Jacob Dibert woke one night from a strange and erie dream
He saw a path between two hills near a dark and swollen stream
He told his wife he saw the boys huddled close beside a log
For two more nights the dream returned this vision sent from God

Oh mommy and daddy why can't you hear our cries
The day is almost over, soon it will be night
We're so cold and hungry and our feet are tired and sore
We promise not to stray again from our cabin door

a thousand men had searched in vain the west side of Bob's creek
But Jacob's wife knew of this place and said to travel east
With a guide to take him there, Jacob came upon the scene
And found the boys cold and still beneath the old birch tree

Oh mommy and daddy, look past the tears you cry
We're both up in Heaven now, God is by our side
As you lay us down to rest in the presence of the Lord
Know that we will meet you here at Heaven's door

Oh mommy and daddy, look past the tears you cry
We're both up in Heaven now, God is by our side
And as you lay us down to rest in the presence of the Lord
Know that we will meet you here at Heaven's door

Just had a song do that to me right now.

A couple of posters have already mentioned it, but I have never heard it until now, so decided to check it out.

As the father of two boys, aged 8 and 10.... this one stopped me dead..... brought a tear too.

Allison Krauss... Jacobs Dream.... with the sorty too

I've had this happen a couple of times - usually in music stores when I've thought "Wow, this song is amazing." Usually I've bought the CD on the spot. The last time it was a band I'd never heard of called Zimpala, a French group who do some really lush dreamy jazz stuff. I've never heard them get airplay anywhere, so I'm so glad I heard that song that day. I discovered Jack Johnson the same way.

Yes, many... (but then I am rather easily moved...)

"True Love Ways" - Buddy Holly: romantic lyrics written to his new wife, beautiful music with strings and horns - very different from his usual sound. Tugged at my heart strings already as a young teenager. smitten

"In the Ghetto" - Elvis: that voice and touching lyrics... daydream

"I Want My MTV" - Dire Straits: the long, intruiging intro made me wonder what was to come, and the song has a good beat and fun lyrics, so kept me listening. And the guitar sound, needless to say. boogie

"Twisting By the Pool" - Dire Straits: caught my ear with its upbeat, twist sound - a modern, fun song with a twist! Yay! dance

"Invisible" - Alison Moyet: what a voice - strong and powerful, yet touching. And the melancholy lyrics got me each time. sad flower

"Imagine" - John Lennon: lovely music - but the words, now they made you think, and dream... and maybe even hope. joy

"Mandy" - Barry Manilow: I know, I know - don't laugh! Something about his voice, and the lovely, sweet lyrics, combined with the way the music builds through the marvellous arrangement that made this a powerful song that went straight to my heart. purple heart
