The moment you try to become intelligent, you cease to be intelligent. This is really important, so give your mind to it a little bit. If I am stupid and everybody tells me that I must become intelligent, what generally happens? I struggle to become intelligent, I study more, and I try to get better marks. Then people say, "He is working harder," and pat me on the back; but I continue to be stupid because I have only acquired the trimmings of intelligence. So the problem is not how to become intelligent, but how to be free of stupidity. If, being stupid, I try to become intelligent; I am still functioning stupidly.
You see, the basic problem is that of change. When you ask, "What is intelligence and how is one to become intelligent?" it implies a concept of what intelligence is, and then you try to become like that concept. Now, to have a formula, a theory or concept of what intelligence is, and to try to mould yourself according to that pattern is foolish, is it not? Whereas, if one is dull and begins to find out what dullness is without any desire to change it into something else, without saying, "I am dull, stupid, how terrible!” then one will find that in unraveling the problem there comes an intelligence freed of stupidity, and without effort.

Interesting. I don't think that one can "become" intelligent. One is or isn't intelligent...a blade of grass is a lifeform, but has no intelligence. A human is an intelligent lifeform, and some more than others. One has the ability to become more educated, and mayhaps more erudite, but not more intelligent.

I think that is something in our genus – Simple: You were or you were not born intelligent.

You can become clever, more educated by time, by studying……

But intelligent - No

Interesting topic, i like it! All of the ideas coming in are all acceptable but im still looking some words that can fully satisfy my interest. Being intelligent is somewhat having a mind power to excel, to become famous, to create an extraordinary things to exist or to distruct all forces of living and non- living things. It can either produce positive or negative impact to our existence. But have you ever think what is the greatest weapon to kill your intellect? Have you been struggling sometime that you have such great intellect but end up like a fool among the foolest? There you go, its only one thing that i can say the greatest enemy of intellect....it is your heart! If your heart beats extraordinarily its either to love or to save life or to sacrifice for others....then you can say that you might just dumb your intellect for some reasons you cannot explain...and it is really coming from your heart.

I disagree with the basic premise of Krishnamurti...(who was he, Google?)

Think of 3 concepts....intelligence, wisdom, and knowledge.....

These things all relate to the same thing, right? But they are different. Can you have lots of knowledge, but still remain stupid? If your answer is "yes", you are probably thinking of emotional intelligence. The basic premise that, if you are stupid, an attempt to become "intelligent" is useless, is false.

Any discussion of this nature needs a definition of those three qualities, otherwise you'll forever be lost without a paddle up the Semantics...

Very good Lagoona, I think it's more like this though, Knowledge is intelligence, wisdom is knowing how to use that intelligence wisely..

So I believe the three should be Knowledge wisdom, and understanding

Hypothetical situation...

An intelligent person can think their way out of a situation, but a wise person will never allow thenselves to be in a situation that they have to think their way out of, which brings about understanding to know the difference..jmo

Well, I am too stupid to argue with wisdom about intelligence, so I'll leave that to truly clever people....

laugh

...but let me say this:
I have met some incredibly knowledgeable people who exhibited absolutely no emotional intelligence....so in that sense, you can have all sorts of MBA's, and PHD's behind your name, and still be considered an idiot in company...THis I would refer to as being knowledgeable without being intelligent...

For me the question is rather, are we born with intelligence, or is intelligence acquired?
In other words, if you have an IQ of 138, are you born with that number, or does that number increase as you grow up?

grin

What a load of crap. Intelligent people always know how much they have to learn. Most intelligent people say they're stupid and know nothing.

Buahaha! I wondered if this was a joke. Check your Zen humour at the door, thanks.

I believe an IQ can be increased.. what really makes a person intelligent then? Is it how much knowledge they Possess? Or the wisdom of how to use what they know?dunno

I've been told that I am intelligent and wise. I don't argue with these people about this.

These same people have also mentioned that I am going bald. I still don't argue with them.

I wear a hat and I show them my abs...rolling on the floor laughing

I have a friend who memorized much the dictionary and much of the Encyclopedia Britannica, yet could barely hold a decent conversation. His car runs out of gas twice a month, and he is not very good at applying anything which he has read to life. The man can rip virtually anyone apart in Trivial Pursuit, but couldn't manage to perform an oil change on his car. Even with the manual.

I am of the belief personally that there is Intelligence, Understanding (knowledge) and Wisdom. Intelligence being the act of gathering information. Understanding the art of knowing that only 50% of what we intake is actually true, and Wisdom being the ability to discern which half is actually the truth in any situation.

This thread was not perpetrated to change anyones ideals by any means but to cause introspection or deliver a foundation for conversation on this topic.
I do not really see how anyone could be wrong as it is extremely difficult to define any abstract idealogy.

I dunno why this confusion ...........intelligence, wisdom, and knowledge r differnt

I have worked with some of the sharpest ppl .prof peter c doherty to name a few ...n most believe .....intelligence is what u r born with but we can surely better ......ourselves ...most important being desire (too depends on genes to an extent ....largely on environment )

havin said that.knowledge ..how u gather depends on intelligence hugely .some ppl see in pictures ..visual .very sharp some r not..........its just that its so qualitative we can not make distinction.........so others can compensate by givin in extra but cant really compete exclusively in that area.

experts see wisdom as "domain fundamental pragmatics of life." stress being on fundamental n pragmatics(again voliition) .....explains so many ppl with lil knowledge do just fine.
