Recently I was given a scenario by the GM of an engineering company
with an example where there is no mathematical solution possible.

What do you think?

Scenario is this:

3 men rent a room costing $40

However the caretaker charges them $20 each so $60.

But then he feels guilty and gives each man back $5
So he gave back $15 and he keeps $5 for himself.

Now the men after getting back $5 each really paid
$45 for the room plus the $5 kept by the caretaker is only $50.

BUT the caretaker started with $60.

So where is the missing $10?

Who has it and where did it go????

uh oh moping

If you think that you have an answer then please let me know in the next day or two,

because I will not be booking in to anymore hotels with such dodgy caretakers.

I just can't take the risk.dunno frustrated

Well done you are spot on!

That was exactly my calculation that in fact there never was
an extra $10 therefore nothing is missing!

You are very good at maths most people were completely
bamboozled including this GM.

Well done. thumbs up

Crotalus has right.
60-40=20
20=3 guys * 5 $ + 5 $ for caretaker = 15$+5$=20$

You must remember that they paid 45 $ for room which costs 40$ so caretaker took his 5$ from this excess payment.

No 10$ missing.

The misconception that most people had was the payment
of $45 plus the $5 added up to only $50 yet the caretaker
started with $60.

So the perception of a missing $10.

But your conclusion was correct so well done to you too.thumbs up

So he gave back $15 and he keeps $5 for himself.(He keeps 15 for himself) 40 room
60 to caretaker.
15 given back.
45 caretaker keeps.

40 for room. 6o extra to care taker, care taker gives back 15 and keeps 45 for himself.

Ok young lady I have found it.professor

But when you have your answer please DO NOT tell me
as the task for me is that I have to tell you what answer you came up with.

So please just let me know when you have an answer and
I will then tell you what I think it is. OK?

Ok everybody here it is:

Just think of a number between 1-9

Now multiply it by 9

then add the 2 digits

And minus 5 from the result. OK?

Now assign the number you have with a letter:
A=1
B=2
C=3
D=4 etc

Ok now think of a country starting with the letter you have.

Also think of an animal with the 2nd letter of the country you thought of. OK

Now please let me know if you have an answer and I wil attempt
to predict exactly what it is.
