rasgumby: must be too early in the morning....
all of you seem to have missed something here...

the right question would be........where did the extra $5 come from..???

read more carefully.

4th line says says getting back $5 each.......... does not say just $5 total.
$5 each would be $15

in the end...

room....................$45
returned..............$15
landlord...............$5

total.....................$65

so where did the extra $5 come from

rolling on the floor laughing

Landlord was given $60 for the room
he returned $15 - $15

So the landlord has $45 and each man has $5 + 5 + 5 = 60

jpunk: You are right!!! Only ONE question to only one of them. One ONLY TELLS TRUTH, other ONLY TELLS LIES.

So ask one how the other would answer

If you ask truth teller, "what door would your friend say was the door to freedom?" he would point to death door, as the other is the liar

If you asked the liar the same question he would also point to the death door as it is not what the truth teller would say

So therefore choose the other door!!!

It boils down to the (+) + (+) = (+) , (-) +(+) =(-).......yada yada.bla bla.....

jpunk: Enduro is relying on the obvious, the number will always be 4, so the country starts with a D, (D=4), therefore most people would say Denmark when asked to name a counry beginning with the number's letter equivalent, then 2nd letter of country being E, he expects you to say elephant.

my answer would screw him up though!!!

Yes most people's answer should be:

"Elephant in Denmark"

and Jp if you have recently walked through the main street
of Denmark you would not have disputed that!!!

I bet that as the letter was a "D" being 4 which absolutely everybody
would get regardless of what number they thought of.
So you must have some obscure not yet discovered animal whose
name started with an "E", or perhaps you went all Australian
say an Echidna???roll eyes laugh

But you have to admit that " Elephant in Denmark" was the overwhelming
answer for most people???conversing tongue

lorax111: Here is another for you, You are traped, there are two doors. One leads to freedom the other certain death, you do not know wich one is wich. There is a gaurd in front of each door , one allways tells the truth the other allways lies. You do not know wich gaurd lies or tells the truth. You may ask one question, what would that question be?
Dennis

Ok Dennis I have given your problem due consideration and I have the solution for you.professor

As you only can ask one question the key is to consider the idea of a double falsehood ( or double truth, as the case may be).

So the only question then to ask is:

" If I were to ask you if this is the way I should go, would you say yes?"

Interestingly, it doesn't matter which guard you ask, you will most definitely have your answer of which door to freedom, either way. You can't miss!!!

You have the right idear, but if you asked the liar he would still lead you wrong. The positive negitive is double stated in your question as positives and simply asking a double positive questions,,, aka one positive. You need a positive and a negitive to negotiate the additional potential positive and negitive of the doors.

Dennis , it's late and i'll admit that perhaps i'm wrong

No it is definitely right, just think it through again.

The question to ask was:

"If I were to ask you if this is the way I should go, would you say yes?"

So just imagine say you ask the liar.
Then he would want to lie to you telling you "NO" to that door.
But if you asked him "would you say yes...." then he would have to say no.
So obviosly if he says no he wouldn't say yes, then that is the door to freedom.!

And conversely if you asked the truth telling guard then he would have
said yes I would say yes.
So then there is your door to freedom either way. ok??

Remember the key is "Would you say yes..."

and not an open ended question on what would you say or which door is it.
Those questions would give the liar a chance to deceive you.

But to a question of would you say yes, he would have to say no he wouldn't say yes becuse he would have tried to deceive you.
So the truth will be unveiled this way.

Trust me that is definitely the correct answer and you will get 100% for the assignment. Guaranteed!professor

That would be two questions, The answers were given earlier. There are more that I do not know. My instructors told me I had the wrong answers to F with me , they(the answers) were correct but it was part of the test to not accept my answers.

Enduro: Recently I was given a scenario by the GM of an engineering company
with an example where there is no mathematical solution possible.

What do you think?

Scenario is this:

3 men rent a room costing $40

However the caretaker charges them $20 each so $60.

But then he feels guilty and gives each man back $5
So he gave back $15 and he keeps $5 for himself.

Now the men after getting back $5 each really paid
$45 for the room plus the $5 kept by the caretaker is only $50.

BUT the caretaker started with $60.

So where is the missing $10?

Who has it and where did it go????

The way I've heard it is this:

Three men rent a room that costs $25. They each pay $10, making $30...the bellboy gives them each back $1 and keeps $2 for himself. 3x$9=$27, plus $2 for the bellboy is $29....where's the missing $1? That's the one that has no solution!
