I am so disappointed with my government as well as the United Snakes of America. The highest ranking British military commander as well as a high ranking U.S., official announced today that the war in Afghanistan can't be won. DOH ! Did we not learn anything from the USSR, having to admit defeat when they tried to defeat Afghanistan ?

Ideology/religion can't be defeated at the point of a gun. Dialogue is the only answer, no matter what the cost. Yes we will have to give up some of our ethnocentric stand points, but if it saves lives and moves us one inch closer to peace, then it is worth it.

Humans require very little; food, shelter and family, yet we insist in killing each other for a myriad of reasons based on religion, money, power and colour of skin.

Have we progressed in the past 2000 years ? NO. We have landed a man on the moon and that is interpreted as progress, yet more people are dying via war than any time in human history. (I will not mention the extinction of mammals etc., on a monthly basis)

WAKE UP.

Human evolution coming to a halt
Press Assoc. - Tuesday, October 7 04:21 amHuman evolution is grinding to a halt, according to a leading genetics expert.

The gloomy message from Professor Steve Jones is: this is as good as it gets.

Prof Jones, from the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment at University College London, believes the mechanisms of evolution are winding down in the human race.

At least in the developed world, humans are now as close to utopia as they are ever likely to be, he argues. Speaking at a UCL Lunch Hour Lecture in London, Prof Jones said there were three components to evolution - natural selection, mutation and random change.

He said: "In ancient times half our children would have died by the age of twenty. Now, in the Western world, 98% of them are surviving to the age of 21. Our life expectancy is now so good that eliminating all accidents and infectious diseases would only raise it by a further two years. Natural selection no longer has death as a handy tool."

Mutation rate was also slowing down, he said. Although chemicals and radioactive pollution could cause genetic changes, one of the most important mutation triggers was advanced age in men. "Perhaps surprisingly, the age of reproduction has gone down - the mean age of male reproduction means that most conceive no children after the age of 35," said Prof Jones. "Fewer older fathers means that if anything, mutation is going down."

Random alterations to the human genetic blueprint were also less likely in a world that had become an ethnic melting pot, according to Prof Jones.

He said: "Humans are 10,000 times more common than we should be, according to the rules of the animal kingdom, and we have agriculture to thank for that. Without farming, the world population would probably have reached half a million by now - about the size of the population of Glasgow.

"Small populations which are isolated can change - evolve - at random as genes are accidentally lost. Worldwide, all populations are becoming connected and the opportunity for random change is dwindling. History is made in bed, but nowadays the beds are getting closer together. Almost everywhere, inbreeding is becoming less common. In Britain, one marriage in fifty or so is between members of a different ethnic group, and the country is one of the most sexually open in the world. We are mixing into a global mass, and the future is brown."

He added: "So, if you are worried about what utopia is going to be like, don't; at least in the developed world, and at least for the time being, you are living in it now."

Ahhh dear Leo...

You raise some points, but once again, fail to give the entire picture. Sure more people are dying via war. But there are also more people living to old age. True there are more poor people, but there are also more rich people. (As an aside, Leo, did you know that most "poor" people today live better than than most "Royalty" did 150-200 years ago? It's true - you can do the research and discover it for yourself if you ever come down off your dais long enough to garner the facts.) There are more sick people today - just there are more who are not sick or who's lives have been saved by modern medicine. I could go on, but it there's no need to...

The simple fact is that the reason more people are dying in wars, being saved, living in squalor, living in splendor, etc... is that there are simply more people in the world today! Do the research and I'd wager that you'd find that the RATIOS haven't changed much at all as regards the POPULATION. For example: If a typhoon hit... I don't know, uh... Upper East Southwest Peterbiltville in 1819 and killed 10 out of 40 residents, that would mean 25% of the population, right? But if one hit today and killed 1,000 out of 4,000 then the ratio is still... 25%!

I'll make you a deal, Leo! I'll "WAKE UP" if you'll stop looking only at what you perceive the negatives to be and start getting "the whole picture." wine

one of the things I noticed about the recent palin/biden debate was her almost unbridled aggression. we will fight for this and fight for that and invade them and blow those ones up. however I felt the most truly sickening part was palin's little speech about there coming a time when grandparents will sit and tell their grandchildren how america was once a democracy. if a british politician had attempted that sort of nonsense the press would have torn them apart
