Have you ever heard a song that changed you? Into everyone’s life comes times of personal change. Sometimes it is an event, a person, a story, or a song that can incite that change in you. I want this thread to be about songs that positively changed you. Let us know the song. Post the lyrics if you can. And don’t forget to tell us how that song changed you.
My first entry will be the song “Asleep in the Light” by Keith Green.
I first heard this song right after I gave my life to God. The song is a direct rebuke of the church or at least those who profess to belong to Jesus, but do not live like they do. Keith always challenged Christians to live with their lives in the same way they profess with their mouths. This song pointed out to me that being a Christian goes way beyond calling yourself one and going to church. The words “how can you be so dead, when you’ve been so well fed? Jesus rose from the grave, and you… can’t even get out of bed.” can still sting a bit. It is hard to listen to his song, or even read his words, without feeling the heat of Keith’s righteous indignation.
The song is prophetic. Which means Keith endeavors to communicate a message from God. He believed his songs were from God, and so do I.
"Do you see, do you see, all the people sinking down, Don't you care, don't you care, are you gonna let them drown, How can you be so numb, not to care if they come, You close your eyes and pretend the job's done. Oh Bless me Lord, bless me Lord, you know it's all I ever hear, No one aches, no one hurts, no one even sheds one tear, But He cries, He weeps, He bleeds, and He cares for your needs, And you just lay back and keep soaking it in, oh, can't you see it's such sin? Cause He brings people to your door, And you turn them away, as you smile and say, God bless you, be at peace, and all Heaven just weeps, Cause Jesus came to your door, you've left Him out on the streets. Open up, open up, and give yourself away, You've seen the need, you hear the cry, so how can you delay, God's calling and you're the one, but like Jonah you run, He's told you to speak, but you keep holding it in, Oh, can't you see it's such sin? The world is sleeping in the dark, That the church can't fight, cause it's asleep in the light, How can you be so dead, when you've been so well fed, Jesus rose from the grave, and you, you can't even get out of bed, Oh, Jesus rose from the dead, come on, get out of your bed. How can you be so numb, not to care if they come, You close your eyes and pretend the job's done, You close your eyes and pretend the job's done, Don't close your eyes, don't pretend the job's done. Come away, come away, come away with Me, My love, Come away, from this mess, come away with Me, My love."
Thank you for sharing that very humbling song. One song that has stuck with me since childhood is For Those Tears I Died. It reminds me that hurting and questioning why will not make me less of a Christian. My faith will remain intact throughout my trials if I trust that God has a plan even when I may not understand it. These words are a loving reminder that God holds me even closer in times of pain and confusion.
For Those Tears I Died You said you'd come and share all my sorrows You said you'd be there for all my tomorrows I came so close to sending you away, But just like you promised, you came here to stay I just had to pray
(chorus)And Jesus said "Come to the water, stand by my side I know you are thirsty, you won't be denied I felt every tear drop, when in darkness you cried, and I strove to remind you, It's for those tears I died"
Your goodness so great, I can't understand it And dear Lord I know now that all this was planned I know You're here now and always will be Your love loosened my chains, and in You I'm free But Jesus why me?(chorus)
Jesus I give You, my heart and my soul I know now without God, I'll never be whole Savior, You opened all the right doors And I thank You and praise You from earth's humble shores Take me I'm Yours.(chorus)

That was wonderful Curious. Who sings that, and where can I get a copy of it?
bodleing: It was one evening some time in the late sixties when I went to see a singer I had never heard of before. He sung a song that made me question every aspect of my life. I have seen this man perform maybe a hundred times since, his music has changed my life.
Wow bodleing, those words were incredible. I would love to hear how this songs sounds.
Here is song about an event that changed most of our lives. I hope this song helps us to never forget.
"Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)" by Alan Jackson
Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day Out in the yard with your wife and children Working on some stage in LA Did you stand there in shock at the site of That black smoke rising against that blue sky Did you shout out in anger In fear for your neighbor Or did you just sit down and cry
Did you weep for the children Who lost their dear loved ones And pray for the ones who don't know Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble And sob for the ones left below
Did you burst out in pride For the red white and blue The heroes who died just doing what they do Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer And look at yourself to what really matters
I'm just a singer of simple songs I'm not a real political man I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you The difference in Iraq and Iran But I know Jesus and I talk to God And I remember this from when I was young Faith hope and love are some good things he gave us And the greatest is love
Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day Teaching a class full of innocent children Driving down some cold interstate Did you feel guilty cause you're a survivor In a crowded room did you feel alone Did you call up your mother and tell her you love her Did you dust off that bible at home Did you open your eyes and hope it never happened Close your eyes and not go to sleep Did you notice the sunset the first time in ages Speak with some stranger on the street Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow Go out and buy you a gun Did you turn off that violent old movie you're watching And turn on "I Love Lucy" reruns Did you go to a church and hold hands with some stranger Stand in line and give your own blood Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family Thank God you had somebody to love
I'm just a singer of simple songs I'm not a real political man I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you The difference in Iraq and Iran But I know Jesus and I talk to God And I remember this from when I was young Faith hope and love are some good things he gave us And the greatest is love

It's funny that you should pick this song!! The woman who wrote it is not allowed to perform it in most "Christian" churches!! Why?? Because she is a lesbian and had been barred from most "Christian" organizations!! I wasn't a;;owed to even sing this song in the Baptist church I was attending (I was their feature soloist) because it was written by a lesbian!!
Kinda reminds me of another great gospel song..."If That Isn't Love"
I'm a born-again Christian (but haven't been to church in a few months now), but I do love gospel music. I like a lot of it. I can't remember some of the names.
But 1 song that I really love singing to myself, when I'm feeling depressed or feel hopeless, is "Jesus Loves Me".
You know that one...Jesus loves me, this I know. For the Bible tells me so....That has always lifted up my spirits and made me happy again.

Well, thank you for that info. I had no idea who wrote it and I am sorry for her experience, as well as yours. Persecution here on earth is not my place. Luckily I was raised to love and not judge. I wish I could say that was true for more believers.
I am a strong believer in the Bible and what it says. However, we are also not here to judge. My list of mistakes is by no means short. Sin is sin and we will all deal with the ramifications of our choices in the end. It doesn't stop me from loving her or her work until that time comes. Her song brings me a lot of personal comfort.
ooooooooh Mike, I have just found some very, very bad songs that you would all have a hissy fit about - dont fear, I wont post em - even this Atheist aint that much in need of winding you up

I would like to hear about them if they are bad songs that changed your life in a positive way. Maybe just to hear how you explained it.
shipoker58: I didn't say that....it was taken from a "christian" music publication
It sounded a little too over the top, but I do not know the story from which you are referring. I loved the Gaithers, but I do not know them enough to refute the story. I do hope the story is wrong, but I accept that it might be true.

Remember When by Alan Jackson....seems like the past of what was 28 yrs of a married life.......till one day it was no more....came together, fell apart and broke each others heart.... Remember When By: Alan Jackson
Remember when I was young and so were you And time stood still and love was all we knew You were the first, so was I We made love and then you cried Remember when
Remember when we vowed the vows and walked the walk Gave our hearts, made the start, and it was hard We lived and learned, life threw curves There was joy, there was hurt Remember when
Remember when old ones died and new were born And life was changed, disassembled, rearranged We came together, fell apart And broke each other's hearts Remember when
Remember when the sound of little feet was the music We danced to week to week Brought back the love, we found trust Vowed we'd never give it up Remember when
Remember when thirty seemed so old Now lookin' back, it's just a steppin' stone To where we are, where we've been Said we'd do it all again Remember when
Remember when we said when we turned gray When the children grow up and move away We won't be sad, we'll be glad For all the life we've had And we'll remember when
One of the greatest parts of loving God are the unknowns. The Mysteries of God are beautiful (even though some can test you). This song was the first that made me think about how mind blowing the whole story (of the bible) can be. It's the story of how a creator and his creation were separated and then reconciled in the name of love.
"The Final Word" by Michael Card
"You and me we use so very many clumsy words. The noise of what we often say is not worth being heard. When the Father's Wisdom wanted to communicate His love, He spoke it in one final perfect Word.
He spoke the Incarnation and then so was born the Son. His final word was Jesus, He needed no other one. Spoke flesh and blood so He could bleed and make a way Divine. And so was born the baby who would die to make it mine.
And so the Father's fondest thought took on flesh and bone. He spoke the living luminous Word, at once His will was done. And so the transformation that in man had been unheard Took place in God the Father as He spoke that final Word.
He spoke the Incarnation and then so was born the Son. His final word was Jesus, He needed no other one. Spoke flesh and blood so He could bleed and make a way Divine. And so was born the baby who would die to make it mine.
And so the Light became alive And manna became Man. Eternity stepped into time So we could understand.
He spoke the Incarnation and then so was born the Son. His final word was Jesus, He needed no other one. Spoke flesh and blood so He could bleed and make a way Divine. And so was born the baby who would die to make it mine."
I remember this song from the first time my heart broke. Her name was N'Dora, and I really screwed up with her. This song will forever remind me of the dangers immaturity poses to a relationship. I'd like to think that the lessons learned here saved me from similar mistakes later in my life. At any rate, this song communicates how I felt the moment I realized I had messed up. Just in case it sounds familiar, it is the song they played when Alex P. Keeton (Michael J Fox) had his heart broken by Ellen on Family Ties.
"At This Moment" by Billy Vera & The Beaters
What did you think I would do at this moment When you're standing before me With tears in your eyes Trying to tell me that you have found you another and you just don't love me no more
What did you think I would say at this moment When I'm faced with the knowledge That you just don't love me Did you think I would curse you Or say things to hurt you 'cause you just don't love me no more
Did you think I could hate you Or raise my hands to you Now come on you know me too well How could I hurt you when darling I love you and you know I'd never, never hurt you-oo-wo-oo...
What do you think I would give at this moment If you'd stay I'd subtract twenty years from my life I'd fall down on my knees and kiss the ground that you walk on If I could just hold you again
I'd fall down on my knees I'd kiss the ground that you walk on baby If I could just hold you

I will never forget this song by Steve Camp. He wrote it in response to how he saw the church's failing attempts to minister to those infected by the AIDS virus. He commited himself not to be fearful when ministering to those plagued by this disease. He challanged everyone to go where God calls us without fear. The song was amazing because it was written at a time when it was thought you could possibly contract AIDS by even a slight touch. The song revealed to me how our lives should be poured out before God. We should live our lives with absolute passion and love for those around us. And we should not be afraid.
"Do You Feel Their Pain" by Steve Camp
"Have we failed again, talking about the love of God But judging those who need it most All these afflicted ones, I feel their lives just fade away Left to face the end alone So we say a prayer for their needs Afraid to touch, to hurt, to bleed
Do you feel their pain, has it touched your life Can you taste the salt in the tears they cry Will you love them more than the hate that's been Will you love them back to life again?
We should feel ashamed, allowing fear to close our minds These are lives we can't ignore Oh, don't turn away, will you see Jesus in each of them These are souls He suffered for
There is hope for them, open up your heart There is grace for them, do you think we've gone too far?
Oh empty eyes, and lonely souls Starving for love and crying for hope And Jesus said, "Bring them unto Me I will make them whole, I can set them free"
Will you care for them, or let them go alone Will you lend a hand, or will you cast the stone"
