Obama knew exactly what he talked about mentioning the Bittered clinging to their guns and stuff, and instead of actually "listening" to the message the man sent out, the Bittered got even more Bittered and they became Angry and the Hatered Rised.... it is just a simple and a very strange Fact what Obama talked about that day and a good way begining to think about what one beleives in and Why?

I was reading your answer to Kansan above and wondering about why it is that so many ordinary hard-working Americans don't believe in organising to get a fair price for labour. They have been sold a dream of individualism in which everyone works hard and sticks up for themselves and there is virtually no government. Somehow this is meant to achieve paradise of fairness and freedom. Unions are bad, taxes are bad, immigrants are bad, intellectuals are bad and it is all someone else's fault!!
Somehow in that imaginary world you don't help the needy and the poor, you don't pay extra tax to look after the sick and yet everyone is a Christian.
I think you have a hard struggle ahead!

It works this way.
We open some of the close miltiary bases in the SW near the border.
To apply for the program.....all they do is show up at a border entry point. Given avialable program slots.....they are bussed a center....
for 30 days they go thru medical, background checks, route to citizenship.....eventually qualifing for entry.
ICE deports some 296,000 illegals annually. When ICE makes a deports a group or when a employing sponsor needs some workers....the employers go to the processing centers and draw them out. Now they are legal to work with a green card, have a drivers license, and we know that they are not terrorist.
What is going to happen....is the flow north is not going stop simply because we put a fence up. They are going to build up at those Mexican cities and towns along the fence. There they are at the mercy of the drug cartels that tunneling the fence or cutting it. They still need a mule to to get them thru to inside the country. That mule now has to use one of these drug method to get them inside. They are open to extortion.....bribery....assault....and murder when they work with drug cartels for crossing into the country.

Hey ttom! Sounds like a good way to reduce illegal immigration, terrorism and offer them better protection at least on paper... However, it's not that black and white if we consider some negative impacts for worker's rights and small and big businesses taking advantage of workers who are willing to work for unfair wages and possibly below the minimum wage line. Are there any loopholes that benefit the employers? I've heard some bad stories how green card immigrants were taken advantage of in a non-democratic way by employers.
So are the employers who go to the processing centers to select approved green card residents going to offer a minimum wage jobs for these approved immigrants? And isn't it taking jobs away from American citizens while the small and big businesses get to save money by paying these green card workers unfair wages instead of paying more fair wages to American employees?

There a some unions that are really strong in America. The union that is associated with UPS workers is the strongest in the country I think. UPS workers are paid well, they get 12 sick days a year paid at 100 percent, and they do get between 2-5 weeks of vacation depending on tenure.
I agree, it's ludicrous that the union movement is weak in general in America and in general, does not have much influence. The middle class workers are the ones who suffer from a lack of union influence. They will more than likely never be rich, yet they support (indirectly) measures and action that only promote and protect the rich. Polarization in motion!

Falingman, the main reason is that our Union have a history of failing the working person. Early days of Unions here....they organized with the fist, the club, and the gun. Sure it is not that way to day.
But today, a Union.....take the Teamster Union......will force management into a position of paying such high wages and benefits.....that it hard for the company to be profitable. The Auto and Airline industry are both good examples. Why is Detriot having trouble with foreign competition in making and selling cars? Part is the aged
infrastructure of the factories. Another is the cost of American Union workers.
A great example in the Airline industry is TWA....Howard Hughes old Airline. The workers at TWA decided to Unionize....and then got major contract increases. But then came competitive airline ticketing. TWA cannot compete.
Both McCain and Obama are saying the American worker is the best in the world. I don't know man....the Japanese, the South Koreans, even some in China.....are very skilled, dedicated, and hard working. American worker is good, no doubt about that. But he gets overpaid when compared to some foreign workers. That is why work and jobs have gone overseas.
