Hippie apes make war as well as love, study finds By Michael Kahn

LONDON (Reuters) - Despite their reputation as lovers not fighters of the primate

world, bonobos actually hunt and eat other great apes, German researchers said

Monday.

Their findings, the first direct evidence of hunting by the so-called "hippie"

apes, show that such behavior is not linked to male dominance as females rule

bonobo society and also go on hunts.

"We always have this view that hunting is a male business," said Gottfried Hohmann

of the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany.

"What our study shows is this is not necessarily the case.

"This has implications for models on early humans that people have proposed how

humans have evolved," said Hohmann, whose findings are published in Current

Biology.

Bonobos, chimpanzees and orangutans, collectively known as the great apes, are the

closest genetic relatives to humans and scientists study their behavior to learn

more about our own evolution.

The apes are generally considered more peaceful than their close cousins, the

chimps, and have a reputation for free-loving ways because sex plays a major role

their society, being used for greetings, conflict resolution and reconciliation.

Scientists had thought bonobos, found in the lowland forest south of the river

Congo, only ate small animals such as squirrels, forest antelopes and rodents they

encountered.

But over five years of observing a group of bonobos the researchers recorded about

10 instances when a group of the apes set out on hunting trips in search of

chimpanzees.

Each time the bonobos silently crept through the woods on the ground, trying to

get underneath a group of chimps before clambering up a tree in a sudden attack,

the researchers said.

The bonobo hunts were successful on fewer than half the excursions and in some

cases shared the meat, evidence they were willing to share to encourage group

hunting, Hohmann and colleagues said.

Too much monkey buisness for me...Only cause I've got someting else to do...

But in short, I think it's either a case of a gene malfunctioning in a few bonobos..or some 'inter-racial sex' between a bonobo and chimp..
eg..Ligers...

Is it just me, or did not this article slide around on the subjects a bit confused

from... " reputation as lovers not fighters of the primate

via... " is not linked to male dominance as females rule

"

to... " hunts were successful on fewer than half the excursions and in some

"

I got confused.

Right, so they are not friendly Hippies eating only squirrels? Or is it they are not male dominated? Or is it that they actually do share their meals. Or is it that they hunt great apes?

What ever they are, they seem much like us. Confusing laugh

Too much monkey business. too much monkey business.
Too much monkey business for me to be involved in!

Salesman talkin to me - tryin to run me up a creek.
Says you can buy now, gone try - you can pay me next week, ahh!
Too much monkey business. too much monkey business.
Too much monkey business for me to be involved in!

Blond have good looks - tryin to get me hooked.
Want me to marry - get a home - settle down - write a book!
Too much monkey business. too much monkey business.
Too much monkey business for me to be involved in!

Same thing every day - gettin up, goin to school.
No need for me to complain - my objections overruled, ahh!
Too much monkey business. too much monkey business.
Too much monkey business for me to be involved in!

Take home - something wrong - dime gone - will hold
Order suit - hoppered up for telling me a tale - ahh!
Too much monkey business. too much monkey business.
Too much monkey business for me to be involved in!

Been to yokohama - been fightin in the war.
Army bunk - army chow - army clothes - army car, aah!
Too much monkey business. too much monkey business.
Too much monkey business for me to be involved in!

Workin in the fillin station - too many tasks.
Wipe the windows - check the tires - check the oil - dollar gas!
Too much monkey business. too much monkey business.
Dont want your botheration, get away, leave me!

Up to our necks....thumbs up

For the bonobo to evolve it needs feed it's brain protein. And meat is a very good source of protein. How they discovered or aquired the taste of flesh...dunno

If I was going to make a bet on which species has the best chance of evolving in to 'humans'... between a Mr. Chimp and Mr. Bonobo, Mr B. by a neck.

Who knows maybe planet of the apes isn't really that far away..lets face it we are controlled by a bunch of monkeys today...

True enough.

We are doing our bit in training the original too for some reason. Maybe we should do some more training of our own species first confused

The appear to be displaying exactly the same traits as humans did when evolving, according to anthropological evidence.

We too were said to have been cannibals, matriarchial, and shared to encourage loyalty or fealty, and lets face it sex has always been a bargaining tool.....laugh

I don’t think it is a coincidence; we got rid of the Neanderthal people, who lived side by side with the Homo Sapiens.

What is there to stop another race to catch up with us? After all, the way we both did it seems to be the way to eternal world destruction laugh

I have a bit of a problem with the whole neanderthal thing. Never could understand it. Once it was believed that they were primitive in the extreme and hardly any brain function, animals really, and now they are saying that they were much more intelligent than any other species at the time, and neolithic peoples had better brain function than we have now. Did they disappear or counterbreed? All redheads are suppposed to be descended from them, so if they were got rid of, then why are there still so many redheads?

Now, that got to be an Irish tale laugh

We do not really know what happened, but it seems logic that the Sapiens finer limbs and better flexibility counted for us to make better tools and hence survive easier.

I do not doubt that we did our best to make the Neanderthals extinct, and perhaps we had success, as we have had with other species interfering with our need of prey.

Also I very recently saw a documentary stating that they have now found a gene that links redheads and intelligence to neanderthals.
