On another thread a member made a comment about "civil society"...and I guess that is what we all strive for, as well as turning out our children so that they understand the "rules" for a civil society...

But where did those "rules" come from...who made them up...who breaks them...and why?

And do the "punishments" fit for those who do not follow the "rules"?

How about, tolerance, reason, good will towards neighbours ... and perhaps cooperation.

But who decided that those qualities would contribute to a "civil society" and why?

I believe that it´s something relatively innate within humans... as it is with other animals... I have to laugh when I hear people say that without religion there can be no morality. Animals the world over live in harmonious groups for self preservation... which is the same reason that humans live in societies. Going back to caveman times... a group of hunters could bring down a woolly mammoth but an individual alone didn´t have much chance of survival. With out the "civil" part you have no cooperation within the society, which is necessary for its survival.

I believe it was a scottish guy-ferguson- back in the 1700s who first came up with the phrase "civil society" and the theory during the period of enlightenment. there was also adam smith who wrote a lot of ideas about this. de-toqueville's "democracy in america" is an excellent book that expands on the ideas. german philosopher hegel also wrote a lot and obviously marx had quite a few things to say to.

While a joke... there is a lot of truth to that... simply because in reality we have no effect on each others lives, don´t depend on each other for survival and therefore there is no need of civility... but because most of seem to function better in a "civil" society we are more comfortable when the setting reflects that.... obviously there are exceptions for every rule... wink

The first one to express it philosophically in the modern sense is Thomas Hobbes in Leviathan...without a social contract, society devolves into a "war of all against all"...of course, his was a monarchal viewpoint, so the embodiment of the state to him was a soveriegn monarchy with unlimited power vested in the king...different kinds of social orders all produce the same social contract, however, be it a republic or a monarchy, because ultimately its built upon a consensus...
