If space is a vaccum and the sun is a mass of burning gas why did grade seven sience teach me that a flame needs oxygen to exist?

i thought the sun doesnt really burn .. it kind of glows or radiates..
converts hydrogen into helium or something - and no oxygen is necessary. I dont know - GOOGLE it :D:professor:

The Sun is basically a thermonuclear bomb with a built-in thermostat. Just as in a hydrogen bomb, hydrogen atoms are fusing together to make helium atoms and this nuclear reaction produces heat (along with the light that we see). If the reactions go on too fast, the Sun expands slightly (just like a balloon expands when you heat up the air in it). This slows down the reactions and then the Sun cools and contracts. If it contracts too much, the nuclear reactions speed up, and then the Sun heats up and expands again. So the Sun stays at the same temperature, burning its nuclear fuel at a steady rate. At the rate it is going, we have about 4 billion years left until the Sun burns out

The Sun 'burns' nuclear fuel that does not need oxygen. Nuclear energy
comes in two forms: fission in which heavy elements are broken down into
lighter ones; and fusion in which light elements are 'fused' together to
make heavier elements. Stars 'burn' by nuclear fusion.

Here you go - iw as right about something !!! applause

Oxygen is the third most abundant element on the sun. The sun is, by mass, 73.4% hydrogen, 25% helium, 0.8% oxygen, and 0.8% various other metals. In astrophysics, the term "metal" refers to any element that is neither hydrogen nor helium
