Woman jailed over virtual murder

Fri, 24 October 2008

A 43 year old woman was jailed in Japan after she allegedly killed her virtual husband in a popular video game.

The woman was reportedly furious at finding herself suddenly divorced on the internet game 'Maplestory'.

Authorities say she illegally accessed log-in details of the man playing her husband in the game plot, and killed off his character.

The woman, a piano teacher, is in jail in Sapporo waiting to learn if she faces charges of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating data.

She was arrested on Wednesday and taken 620 miles from her home in southern Miyazaki to Sapporo, where her "husband", a 33-year-old office worker lives.

If charged with the offences, and convicted, she faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.

The news of the arrest was widely reported in the Japanese media, with the press expecting the woman to be released for the sake of 'common sense'.

A Sapporo police official, according to the Associated Press news agency, said the woman had used the man's ID and password to log in to the game last May to carry out the virtual murder.

"I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry," she was quoted by the official as telling investigators.

Maplestory is a Korean-made game, which has grown in popularity around the world but has a strong fan base in the Far East.

The game centres on defeating monsters, but players can also engage in social activities and relationships - including marriages - through their digital characters, called avatars.

I find it both hilarious and pathetic....love the reality headline:
'Woman charged with virtual murder!' only begs the question Will the real murder soon follow? Possible news film at 11pm...
The social aspects of this can only become more pathetic as it is analyzed deeper that people take refuge in and seek social affirmation by living virtual lives, but then again, in many cases reality is far worse...I hope the follow-up stories will debate this complex issue.
To each, their own...c'est la vie

Well, the headline:

'Woman claims she was infected with STD online'

is still incredible.......... but, maybe, in the future - who knows?

I knew a couple (the wife was a long-time friend of my parents) who, when the husband retired, just left each other notes around the house...........

They hated each other, but didn't get divorced as neither wished to move out of the family home.

Anyway, the husband finally died.

His widow is now both financially secure and enjoying life at last!

I love a happy ending............ cool

Yeah but no but, was he a lot older?

Were the dice loaded in her favour?

Was the breakdown all his fault?

We all like his wife.............. nobody seemed to like him.

He was very full of himself, and was an International Director of a well known European bank. He later became a Director of a Japanese bank.

I guess he was good at his job, but had an unpleasant personality - probably died quite a sad and lonely man - but who knows?

sigh

Interesting point, but I doubt that the 'virtuality' of anything can take over without a person initiating the events on purpose or by default; then again we have the problem of 'existence' versus 'living' don't we...is it better to exist or to live...sort of 'ask not what the world can do for you, but what can you do for the world!' %D
Here we are on another precipice of mental anarchy, better consult our copies of the Hitchiker's Guide To the Galaxy...for inspirational purposes only...%D
More and more, however are opting out of 'reality' as many find it unbearable, unreliable, incoherent and unstable, but then again, Life is fluid and changes; stagnation is in the end willful. People bring it on themselves for varied reasons. Not all can cope with the circumstances they find themselves in. The virtual worlds that exist and are created by those are only isolating and exacerbating their problems until they reach their breaking points ...
To Live or to merely exist...ummm a virtual Shakespeareian monologue..%D

Hmm i dont know if i fully agree with you ..though what you say is very interesting......i think men have always opted out of reality for at least part of their conscience life....Auden once said mankind cannot bear too luch reality.....and i think this is so true and applies to us all but to have ways to remove one self from reality for a while its like a safety value a sanctuary that keeps us sane ....where our innocence can be restored ...to allow us the ability to go out once again into the cruel world...... people always did this today we use the virtual world in the past they used fairytales...myths stories..science fiction......when coleridge wrote kubla khan he was on morphin...kids today smoke weed......

We can take ourselves out of the reality of a situation to focus on realising a dream; for an artist this might be ignoring hunger and material things to get a painting finished........ the artist is making that image, that virtual reality in his mind become real.

Then there are giants among men (both good and evil) who dream a virtual reality world and make their dreams come true - conquering unexplored lands or outer space, or carving a 'new world order' via death and destruction.

Virtual reality can be both good and bad - making our dreams come true can be either 'Heaven on Earth' or a living nightmare!

One person may dream of true love and 'romance' and make that wonderful dream come true - another turn his or her virtual reality dream into some heinous crime when acted out in reality.
