If someone stated something they believe to be fact, and then it turns out to be a lie....

Is it actually a lie?

(Remember they BELIEVED it when they stated it)

If a trees falls in the forest does it still make a sound sure, but we are all ignorant at times lol. Maybe we want things to be true very badly at times lol.

Yes...civilizations have been structured on clever lies and manipulations....and the people who defend the grand lies unknowingly are in fact living the lie and trying to pass it on to future generations. It's not their fault. Some find out, others don't. That's how it is...

"Tell a lie loud enough and long enough and people will believe it." - quote from a very infamous man.

Nothing would be what it is,
Because everything would be what it isn't.
And contrary wise, what it is, it wouldn't be.
And what it wouldn't be, it would.
You see? - Lewis Carroll

No, it lacks the element of dishonesty.

Hi Oceewave

I really like your answer....however....

What if their belief is due to their own denial of the truth, does it still lack dishonesty?

There's a big difference between lies and deceit.

I would suggest its a misconception, If a person honestly believed in a fact told by someone they trusted, and they passed on that fact, there is no dishonesty.

Makes me think of the gossip game we would play at home parties.laugh If you were told a lie to begin with and you pass it on can you even imagine how blown up it will be by the time it gets passed on down the line? Kind of like reading profiles, some you know right away they are lies, others seem very genuine. A lie is a lie and you need to really think about things before you continue the gossip. JMO

Ahh... self deception, that adds a bit of a twist.

I don't think a willingness to deceive oneself automatically correlates to a willingess to deceive others,

but for some reason it would still put me on alert for other signs of deception.

I might have doubts as to how fully they believed their own denial,

and their willingness to pass their untruth onto me rather than look at it for what it is,

could be a sign that the way they value others as compared to themselves may be out of balance,

in the very same way that it would be for a typical liar.

That is if you believe as I do, that the fundemental moral flaw of dishonesty

is a willingness to intentionally flaw someone else reality, for your own benefit.

I wouldn't class it as a lie,

not in the true sense of the word ,

it was done deliberately ,

and at the time ,the person had the facts wrong .

To me that isn't a lie and I would forgive !!
