If that is the correct terminology? ..... When you describe your "race", "heritage", and you come from a mixture ...... how do you decide what is "You"?

I bring this up because last night I was asked where I come from - when I said South Africa - the person was aghast, and said "But you are not Black!" So then I had to describe my ancestry ..... Mother average white S.African - born of German father and Irish mother with a bit of Romany blood in her. Father average white S.African - born of Swedish father (himself a mixture of something) and British mother. So what exactly does that make me? Then to confuse matters further, somewhere in my Dads lineage is Goan indian .......doh confused Of course ..... there could be other types mixed in here too - some Enuit? Russian? Red Indian? Mayan? Inca? Italian? Arab?

Then I have Swiss grandchildren ....... they get the bloodline from marriage, not me.......
And I got Iranian grandchildren ...... Ditto!

Now ..... do I pick out one that I rather fancy, and just use that? Like call myself "Romany Gypsy", or Indian, or German, or Irish, or British, or Swedish? I belong to South Africa - so I think I can ONLY be South African!?grin

Heard that many times in the Bahamas, even though about 10% of the Populace is other than of African Descent.
Maybe it becomes time we started defining people by what they ARE,NOT what their Ethnicity is.

It would be impossible to trace my roots, but I know that last they checked I originate from somewhere in Africa. conversing

Just lost a bit of colour on my way north, trying to win some of it back down here laugh

Yes, that is so. Its much like when asked "What is your religion" ... I hate that question. At last I sort-of mastered the answer ... but it begins to get a bit time-consuming and leaves the questioner totally confused, I think!

Q. Wots your religion?
A. You mean what do I do religiously?
Q. Yes.
A. Well, I wash my teeth religiously 3 times a day, and .......
Q. No, I mean WOT is your Religion?
A. Oh you mean like who do I worship?
Q. Yes.
A Well, I dont realy worship anyone, but once I sort of worshipped Elvis .....
Q. WOT CHURCH do you attend?
A. Oh, I dont attend any church anymore, I used to attend Sunday School when I was small ...
Q. I mean .... Were you ever baptised, or christened?
A. Well, yes, I was baptised in the Baptist church, and Christened in the Anglican church, and Confirmed
in the Catholic church, and then baptised again in the Apostolic Faith Mission, and baptised again in
another church but I cant remember its name .....
Q. Madam, WOT RELIGION must I put in this form?
A. Why?
Q. Cause you gotta have a Religion!
A. Well, in that case you can say I am a "Follower of the teachings of Christ".
Q. What church is that?
A. Its not a church, its what He teaches in the Bible.
Q. Are you a Catholic?
A. Well, I do have catholic tastes - you know - like - I enjoy most things in life.
Q. So, you are Catholic?
A. No no, most definetely NOT! I am a Christian... sort of.
Q. So, can I say you are Anglican?
A. No no, I am NOT Anglican, or any other thing.
Q. So then ... WOT must I put in this form space?
A. Just leave it blank?
Q. Cant - it has to be filled in.
A. Then just put in there "Yes" ......? Like the same as where it says "Sex"....?

grin cheers

Its this white skin from Africa that seems to confuse the folk here ..........! Well, its not White White like WHITE, just a darker shade of their pale, if you know what I mean?

And then they think that we all live in mud or grass huts in Africa .. with Elephants and Lions strolling around our gardens! ...... Realy!..... seems the cities and towns there dont get enough TV coverage?!

Well, by "sort of" I mean I had my bedroom walls plastered with his photos and album covers, his name painted all over my clothes, his music blaring out every moment I was at home, I wore his "Ducktail" style haircut, and Blue Suede Shoes and skin-tight denims (and those were the days before Stretch fabric!) - and everytime one of his movies hit town screamed my lungs out (with everyone else in the theatre) - so I still never actually heard what the sound-tracks of King Creole or GI Blues were about ..... Only now am I able to watch them in peace and silence and concentration!

So now, may I say .... ALL HAIL THE KING! LONG LIVE ELVIS!bowing bowing bowing
