BarrenPneuma: My last name is a testament to a man I have never seen in any way as a father or a man worthy of having his name continue through my life. I would gladly take the woman I Love's name as it has not lost any semblance of what should be recognized as a surname of honour and pride. I guess it would depend on the situation but I would never force my last name upon anyone willing or unwilling. If they chose to forgo their own I would likewise not object and in doing so perhaps regain some semblance of meaning for a word that to me has lost all meaning.

Hey, Mark. I think you hit on a key point in the highlighted sentence: one should not attempt to pressure or force a lady into taking one's name. It should be something she chooses freely and joyfully.wave hug

I'd prefer it if she took my name, but it wouldn't be a marriage breaker if she didn't. It's one of those things we'd discuss long before we got married and if there was some problem that was irreconcilable (Like her wanting me to take her name) then we probably weren't meant to be together after all laugh

BnaturAl: I've always wanted to hyphenate my name to Biggus-Dickus , but only because I'm fan of my python

That's odd, some of the women on CS said your name should be Teeny Weenie. grin

Ambrose2007: The highlighted sentiment seems somewhat common, Vonney. The problem is that one might wonder if one's second marriage has second-class status relative to the first. I don't think that would be a good thing.

well I really dont see myself getting married again. But I do see your point, I think that during my marraige I lost some of myself and taking my name back was symbolic so I just dont want to let it go again.

I'd leave that choice up to her, to keep her surname if we got married, but I'm keeping my own, and not hyphenating either. My last name has plenty of letters in it as it is.laugh

Good point, Sweet.

I see a problem, however, with a potential spouse being unwilling to take your name while having taken (or still having) her ex's. I wouldn't do well with that at all, personally.

Being an only child I would like to keep my last name and hyphenate my husbands last name..I agree that those are things you need to talk about before getting married, but I would hope the man that I am with understands where I am coming from..

And really it's not the last name that counts, but it's the quality of the marriage..wine

I would never expect him to. That just wouldn't be right, in ANY sense.

You should hear how mine is pronounced. It has two w's in it and a 'w' is pronounced as a 'v', here. They say the 'v' twice, it sounds so bad.

I really love my surname. thumbs up head banger
