Sustainable means what we take, we put back, or it is able to replace itself within the necessary time when we need it again.
What are the things you already do or live without, in order to do your part for global sustainability, for this generation and the next (especially those who have or want children)?
I bike whenever I can, to nearby places.
I plan my car trips when running errands so I get things done following a route so I spend less fuel.
I avoid plastic as much as possible.
I reuse water from the sink and washing machine for the plants and to wash the house floor and the car.
I have the least possible electric appliances at home: PC, TV, stereo, iron, washing machine, fridge and shower.
I take short showers.
I only buy what I need (as in I don´t need expensive clothes and I don´t need to change my cell phone for another one just cause it´s "new", if the old one still works).
I don´t throw food away, ever - everything gets consumed in time.
I avois opening the fridge as much as possible - open it 3 or 4 times a day only, quickly get what I need and close it.
I separate the garbage, recycle paper at home send the "dry" garbage to be recycled.
I avoid take away or delivery food because of the boxes and bags they come in.
I keep the lights and electric appliances off when I´m not using them.
I avoid printing things I don´t really need.
I get my clothes fixed rather than buying new ones.
I'm not as far along as you on this...but I have changed most of my lightbulbs to CF's, I recycle everything that I can, or reuse it. I composte, and I grow my own herbs. I keep the shower as short as possible, and have replaced appliances and toilets with more energy saving ones.
I actually had the water company stop by to check my inside meter because there was so much less water being used after replacing the old dishwasher and a couple of toilets. They wanted to "make sure there wasn't a leak somewhere".

Good to see you, too! Of course I came in to talk on your thread...great topic, too. Every bit helps, and I do what I can, and strive to do more each day. It just never seems like enough, though. I know how important it is, though. So...I'll be watching and learning. Just might not be all that often tonight. I've got to start cleaning house...I've got a very special guest coming here tomorrow night, and I've got less time to get it done now that we've bumped it up to then.

I also cycle when I can
Use public transport rather than the car, its cheaper than parking/fuel
I recycle when possible
I refuse to use cf light bulbs as the pollution in manufacturing is very high
No point in recycling water for the garden as we get rain for free, almost every day
Take one shower a month, but have offered to share one with the lady next door, to save water of course I only eat take aways/ready meals but I could starve I guess, or god forbid learn to cook
But I like to think I do my bit for the environment and the next generation.

I like the next door neighbor idea, hadn´t thought of that!!! What a wise way to help save the planet!!!
NO you are admirable. I am trying to get there. Though, I don't Think, I will ever be able to give up my long HOT shower, I am converting to a 19 gal point of demand, H2O heater to save energy
