For those of you that would like to talk to someone but can't afford long distant charges, I found a great way of avoiding that problem (NO I'm NOT a salesman, I'm a cook) I just pay 7.50 and that gets me 3 months of unlimited long distance calls anywhere in Canada and the States. I have family and friends scattered all over Canada, and I just finished talking to my sister in Ontario for quite awhile, and it had no affect on my account..3 months..hahaha can I ever annoy my family and friends, huh ? anywho it's all done through my computer. I use my computer to call peoples home phones and talk as much as they'll listen. VoIp, the program itself is called Skype
the program itself is free, and all you have to do is add 7.50 to your account and you can call whoever you want (in Canada and the States). If you don't have a credit card (which I don't) then you can do what I did, go to any Money-Mart and get a pre-paid card, put about 20.00 on it, go home, add 7.50 to your Skype account, and that's it. You just use your keybord (to punch in the phone number) a mic (obvious reason) and your computers speakers (again, obvious reason). I bought myself a VoIp usb phone (just as a toy) and it works great.
Has anyone else tried this ?? If so, post here on your experiences (positive and negative)..Me.. I love it...

wave Hi Brew - this sounds super interesting to me, however, let us remember that I could not figure out how to control a berserk keyboard and have yet to completely hook up my home stereo/theatre system (think I will just wait to move where there is a man who can do it) - yes I said that-I am going to hand the problem over to a man . This Skype set up sounds complicated and does one have to buy the phone? And you keep your regular land line for local calling, am I correct? Do you download the Skype program? It almost sounds worth looking into for someone who doesn't have a good unlimited long distance calling plan. dunno

Hey kiddo, for starters, no it's not hard to configure, just download it from skype.com install it, give yourself a name, for example, mine is (of course) Brew, TA-DA that's it, then put in 7.50 on your credit..(again) TA-DA done. If you don't have a VoIp phone..guess what..NO BIG DEAL.. you can always use your keyboard, mic and computer speakers, that's all... if you know someone on Skype, then you don't even have to put in any credits, because Skype-to-Skype calls are always free

applause It sounds simple enough Brew and well worth looking into. I have all inclusive unlimited long distance with t.v. and internet through the "provincially owned crown corp." However, there are others elsewhere who do not, so am going to pass on this little tidbit of info and see what can be done....Thanks much! angel

l have a friend who uses skype and he says it great...he says he uses a regular phone and can still make the calls. When he calls me you wouldnt even know he is using skype. He says its easy to hook up, nothing really to it and he has been using it for 3 years now and wouldnt go back to anything else.
l dont need a long distance carrier..have cable here and cable phone so l get all the long distance anywhere in canada and the US included in my cable and phone charges.
But it is a great program and one to look into if you have alot of friends that are long distance....treat yourself, its worth the money.
