I thought the original thread was excellent, so here's some more. In fact I'm prompted to do so by the ghastly news that my country's population, if the media reports are to be believed, has been the victim of a heinous crime - genocide or so it would seem.
See what can happen when you turn your back for just a minute? It's appalling.

One guy was so angry on our Parliament that he drove a couple of rounds on a square in front of it an than he crashed with his car into entrance doors of Parliament.
Public comments are: pity for a car.

Italian Magazine: Corruption, Lack of Indictibility Reign in Bulgaria

9 December 2008, Tuesday

The Italian L'Espresso Magazine has sharply criticized the reality in Bulgaria and especially the corruption practices and the lack of indictability in a reportage published in its latest issue.

The media report, written by Roberto Di Caro, emphasizes on the fact that business, mafia and politics interweave in "the sick country."

The magazine defines the freezing of EUR 220 M of the EU funds as a "loud slap" for Bulgaria. It also cites a statement made by the writer Anton Donchev who claim it is a catastrophe for a country, which has 7.7 million citizens.

There is mentioned also a statement of Bulgaria's Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev who has recently accused the western media of ruining the image of the country.

Stories told by some ordinary Bulgarians have been included in the article to show how easy it is to pay for getting a driving license or to bribe policemen.

According to the weekly, Sofia Mayor Boyko Borissov is the one, who gains credit due to the present social discontent.

In an interview for L'Espresso, he claims the ruling government is to blame for the high levels of corruption.

Asked what he would do if being elected prime minister, Borissov says he would appoint professionals, chosen by Brussels, at all key positions in the country's management. The aim is to prevent stealing more money from the state's exchequer.

"Except that, I would take off the political umbrella, which now protects the Prosecutors' Office," he adds.

Not MY country, but today I saw on BBC news about Zimbabwe ..... 770+ people dead from Cholera epidemic, people starving, babies with distended stomachs and their skin peeling off from malnutrition.
10,000 Zim$ bills lying in the trash cause there`s no food to buy with it!

... And still the world just gawks, and Mugabe sits in "power" of those people....... Sad.sad flower

I read that the mayor of Sofia would replace the top officials with non-Bulgarians, appointed by the EU. (If he were the President, which he's not, of course) laugh laugh

"The times they are a changing"

A travel guide publisher has chosen Belfast as one of its top 12 international destinations for 2009.

Frommer's said that in little more than a decade, Belfast had been "transformed from a fractured city into a hot city-break destination".

It said the city was "moving fast towards its 19th-century accolade of the Paris of the north".

"The army checkpoints that encircled the city centre during the Troubles are a thing of the past," it said.

"Towering above the city, it's the glass dome of the sophisticated new Victoria Square shopping centre that's the real emblem of the city's renaissance."

The other destinations on the list were:

Istanbul
Berlin
Cape Town
Saqqara, Egypt
Washington DC
Cambodia
Waiheke Island, New Zealand
Cartagena, Colombia
Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, Canada
Civil Rights Trail from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, US
Lassen Volcano National Park, California

If anyone wants a great weekend away, i would suggest Berlin for a city break.

The nightlife has to be seen to be believed, and if you like culture well if you cant find some there you must be basically drunk!
