to all folks who know about printers...i have a problem...i recently ran out of black ink..and, though i didn't need any colours,i bought a set of four as it's cheaper than buying black ink alone..or so the very nice people in the store said...

i trundles home and replaced the black cartridge and it worked fine...however, when the black ink cartridge was about 3/4 full i also ran out of megenta.. strangely as i hardly ever do colour printing... anyway, i replaced the megenta cartridge... no problem...it shows up as full on the ink levels screen... the problem is that i then tried to print something and apparently the new black ink cartridge had run out..it had gone from 3/4 full to empty in a instant..

now, as it wasn't exactly cheap, i would like to recover what i think i should have remaining in the black ink cartridge...i have tried everything...shaking it, taking it out and replacing it several times..nothing...black ink out...buy a new one...but there is no way that i have used the whole cartridge...i have hardly used any at all...

are the good folks at E having a laugh?...very mad

any help appreciated...conversing

Printer cartridges are one of the biggest rip-offs....the level of the cartridge is guauged electronically by how many copies you've printed, not by actual physical ink levels...

...I got so ticked off by the whole thing, that I bought myself refill kits, and went the whole hog...did it myself. This worked well, and at about 15 % of the replacement cost, but then the printer manufacturers got clever and made the cartridges technically impossible to refill. You have to get a chip resetter as well. It depends on the brand of machine, the type of ink, it's tricky. And messy. The best way is to buy pirate refills...in large cities, they usually have a blossoming little industry going...but I don't know if u have this sort of thing where u live. Since the thing became so technical and tricky, I chucked it in, and just bend over the barrel when I buy cartridges now...but I still whince when I have to shell out a fortune for them.......it's a rip-off....but then that's why the sell a printer for a couple hundred bucks....they are making their money selling u cartridges, not the printer....

There's a whole bunch of info on the net...sorry I can't help more...

Yeah as Lagoona says they make their money on the so-called consumables - the price competition on the printers themselves is fierce. I worked for a Japanese mfr. of among other things printers. I have a laser printer from them with lotsa toner, fortunately for me. And it's true they go to great lengths to make it hard for customers to use no name ink. They change the shape of the cartidges etc. etc. as well as the electronic measures Lagoona mentioned.
Depending on how far you want to go, there's a German instruction on the net somewhere, how to attach a biggish bottle of black ink to one of the cheapest Lexmark printers in existence. Basically you connect a thin tube to a hole bored in the cartridge and the tube follows the print head but the bottle (upended) is static. Not pretty maybe but very cheap!

I have never experienced the problem you describe.....what is the make and model of your printer?

...your best bet maybe, in the long term, to order online a refill kit....this will require some research and diligence, but people go to ingenius lengths to circumvent the greed of printer manufacturers...good luck..

Hi Guiri, all printer manufacturers sqeeze dosh out of users. I have successfully used Lexmark printers. When the cartridge runs out, buy a new printer from Media Markt (we aint stupid) for 39 euro dollars. And leave the old one there for them to dispose of it.

good idea if you live in a city / next door to a media martthumbs up

i live in a small village and things get a bit more complicated here... still interesting tho... is it really more economical to buy a new printer at 39 euros than to buy the ink to fill it? things are getting daft ... the global throw away society ...

the exact problem i describe in the OP doesn't seem common tho ... i am wondering if my printer isn't perhaps faulty ...dunno

That was good advice from gussi and many people do that but guess what? They don't fill up he cartridges in the new units!!! They're about one third full!!!!
But it's still a good deal to buy a cheap one and trash it when the toner runs out. Treat the thing as a consumable.

Saving ink in a printer can be done by adjusting the print quality. Very easy to do in the "printer settings/properties".

For every day printouts that do not need to look perfect, choosing the "draft mode" will result in printer using a bit less ink. A lot of prints in draft mode will save more ink.

Printing pictures in hi-res and pro quality is what uses lots of ink. So, reducing the number of printed pictures will save again lots of ink. Or, reducing a bit the quality of the picture is the picture is not that important.

Printing web pages is also ink consuming sometimes. Some web pages have a link "print" to a another page with less graphical elements on the page, thus meaning using less color ink. If not, cust select the text you wish to print and print only the text selection.

Printing B&W or gray scale can also save color ink.

A search on Google with "reduce printing costs" (or something alike) will show much more trick to save on costs.
