Congratulations! I'll be happy to lend encouragement.
On another forum I belong to there is the exact same thing going on. The smokers who are participating have set a date and are giving each other little ideas and the like to keep from going to the store to buy 'em!
Got the urge: Do 20 jumping jacks first. Then drink a glass of water.
Chew on straws, etc.

One problem is nicotine gum--it's still nicotine. So get sugarless gum instead.

Best of luck with this new adventure!

Ok, I'm with you on this....but I need a really strong deterrent....pain would be good. Serious pain, like death maybe...otherwise I won't take it seriously. Or maybe a reward...like money...participating parties kick in money to a fund....and the dude who stays clean longest, wins...I love it...Let's do it...death or money...my type of stakes...banana

My doctor was doing his usual how can we stop your smoking speech to me, and he mentioned it being tougher than Heroin to quit.
So I told him then do me like they do the Heroin addicts put me to sleep and filter out all of the bad chemicals out of my blood then so I can get past the withdrawals.
But no he couldn't. So I told him I will keep smoking thenlaugh wink devil

The same methods wouldn't work for nicotine because we have nicotine receptors in our brain.
Cleaning he blood would do no good.
I understand how hard it is as I have quit for 5 yrs once and then 2 yrs after that but started back up about 8 mos ago.
I hope to quit again soon and hopefully for good this time.

Every time I think about trying to quit,I smoke more! I have quit a few times, only to hang around other smokers, bum one, then another, then I am buying a pack, and before i know it,i am smoking a pack a daydoh
I read something awhile back that I am going to try.It said to first quit the things that trigger you to smoke..for example, coffe makes me want one forst thing in the morning,so it said to try orange juice, and talking on the phone, they say doodle instead...just small things you can change to help you subside from lighting up...another tip was to set a date...give yourself some time to get used to the idea. Then, take away ashtrays and get rid of cigs & lighters.Hope that helps...Good luck, keep us posted :)

None will get out alive..sigh

Smokes may kill me, so will the red meat I eat. Several years ago I read a report the milk will cause cancer. Maybe that is why I have had cancer twice.. I will die from something, that is for sure. In the meantime, I will live my life and do the things I enjoy doing.

I started smoking at 15, I am now 66. 6 cartoons a month, $50.00 a cartoon now days. Yep, it is a buck or twosigh I have been involved in racing since I was 15 also. I just bought a 2 year old car and all the equipment that goes with it for 10K, the new engine will be 25K and will last one season if I am lucky. Expensive habit, and yes people die from racing accidents. Should I stop racing?

Marriages have cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars. Women!!frustrated Should I give up on women? My kids have cost me thousands. Should I give up on my kids?

Leo, do NOT use money as the motivator for stopping. If it is really what you want to do, do it. What about other addictions that can kill you just as easily?

Hi paws,

Lagoona has such a support thread on the EU forums.

Though it doesn't hurt to start another one here.

All the best. You can do it.

I have never smoked but helped many people to quit in my work.

It takes three days for nicotine to leave the system. The rest is behavioural, ie habit and all the associations developed over the years with smoking.

One big thing is that you need to be highly motivated, really want to stop smoking. And then focus on seeing yourself as a non smoker for all time and under all circumstances.

A few things you can start to do immediately, are to create your immediate environment to reflect you as a non smoker. Wash curtains, dry clean/wash clothes to remove tobacco smells, throw out any ashtrays.

Select some positive, constructive alternative activities to do instead of turning to the usual cigarette, so any time of the day or night, you can redirect your energy into something more constructive.

You can do it.

thumbs up

I wish you luck in trying to stop. I come to this Thread from a different point of view. A couple years ago I had to make the decision to stop the medical activities that was keeping my brother Alfred alive. He died five minutes later from his lung cancer. Two years ago the love of my life, Liz, died from lung cancer from her smoking. I was holding her hand as she pass away and I listened to her take her last breath. The last six months of her life was horrible for her and the people around her. When you died from lung cancer it is not pretty and it doesn't happen quickly.

I wish all of you smokers well. I do not want you to go through what Liz & Alfred had to endure and for sure I do not want your love ones to go through what I did. Please try to find the will power to stop.

For the ones of you who love to smoke and will continue I do not wish to interfere with your decision. This was just a comment from my heart.

I have quit smoking for over 2 years now. You want to know how? COMMIT LOZENGERS. I know everybody is saying its still not quitting but actually it is. My doctor said smoking cigarettes are the worst thing to do but the commit is fine its just being addicted to the nicotine and its not the nicotine that kills its the smoke. Truthfully it costs more for the nicotine but I can breath, I know Im not causing my lungs harm, and it sure beats the cravings for a cigarette. If I were to have a choice whether I could have a cigarette or commit I would choose the commit hands down. They work THAT GOOD!!!!!!!!
