You can say, to the people that really are deserving - (along the lines of Clark Gable/Rhett Butler here) "I don't really give a darn (ahem) what you think of me, opinions are like bellybuttons (insert another creative word here too, lol) - everyone has em ;)...." Live by that creed (my real language being more colorful folks LMAO) and turns out the little monkeys that seemed to matter kinda vaporize before your eyes, I found out a very long time ago...

in general, in the end, it doesn't matter what anyone says or thinks of another. you know who and what you are, and if others don't like it, well, too bad. we are the ones that have to live with ourselves, nobody else does. but, it would be nice if nobody felt they had to put others down, to feel better themselves

But I actually think, deep inside us all, that we DO care what other people think of us. I certainly don't want to be considered a nasty person, because Im not, so I therefore try not to make nasty comments, unless severely provoked into it.
Yes, its me that ultimately has to live with myself, but I still care what others think of me. And if that's a failing of mine, well, so be it..

sorry, i didn't mean it that it is a failing. And you are correct, deep down, most of us do care, but, we shouldn't, as long as we like who we are. Probably not saying this quite as i mean it.

I don't think it is a failure to care about how others perceive you. We all want to fit into society and to at least be accepted and preferably liked. That is only natural, a basic social survival mechanism. But some people just don't fit and envy those that do so easily. This is the perfect cowardly stage for those to do their nasty daming deads, they would never do it to you in a real life situation I am sure, for one they would probably never get close enough for the chance and that is what gets to them perhaps. Anyway, Sod em, and ignore but that can be easier said than done depending on how thick skinned one is feeling on a particular day.
