etacalpha: Just curious and bored, But of all the military here I would like to know what lessons learned have served you the best throught your career?
I am not military but grew up a military brat and have dated a soldier in the past...
I think most appreciate the friendship, togetherness.
We all appreciate the sun going down and then watching a new dawn and a fresh new day with loved ones still with us...
I found that it taught me a lesson in boot camp that I have carried through my life thus far. "This too shall pass." I learned that I can survive anything by keeping my eye on the big picture and knowing that whatever it is that's wrong is temporary. That, combined with the self confidence I gained, have been the best things I got out of the military, and they have had a profound effect on my life.

I grew up a military brat too. It was like living in your own community when you lived in the PMQ's. Everyone knew each other and you could not go anywhere without running into someone.
What I hated the most was making and keeping friends, they were always coming or going. That is why I always wished I had a brother or sister as when moving to a new place would of had someone to face all the new kids with.

Understand that fully the moving ever 18mths to two years...
You had friends but not ones you kept for years and years...
My parents took the decision to send me to private boarding
school after numerous school moves and then I had those full
time friends and I had my best friend for 27 years.....

I still can't find words with which I can express what word WAR means. The ugliest I've found are not ugly enough. I am still thinking.

As much as I hate the WWF(rasslin)I have to admit they got it right when they reversed the letters into RAW,forward or backward the word still means the same,"THE ART OF KILLING ANOTHER HUMAN BEING",right or wrong WAR/RAW is a way of life for some. George Carlin(R.I.P.)said and I quote"MORE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KILLED IN THE NAME OF GOD THAN ANY OTHER REASON"unquote. He was absolutely correct.
PS,I will not tolerate being bashed on this subject.
I was in the US Air Force for 20 years and served in Vietnam. The military is no different than a civilain career in that it takes working hard, intelligence, and dedication. If you give it your best, it will repay you for your efforts. Pick your friends carefully, pick your co-workers more carefully, and look at the ones who are successful and follow them.

"Wishing you a rainbow For sunlight after showers— Miles and miles of Irish smiles For golden happy hours— Shamrocks at your doorway For luck and laughter too, And a host of friends that never ends Each day your whole life through!"
Sniper1: Do NOT let the shrinks get their paws on him, surround him with family, true friends and (clergy?) every day and night, but don,t make him feel like he's being smothered by it all. Two key words here,TIME and PATIENCE.
This confuses me a bit, as to advising not to seek professional help. My understanding of Vietnam is that the lack of professional help led to high statistics of suicide.
