This guy shows that growing old might be inevitable but decline isn't. Scary stats though.

I didn't watch the link, but aging of the body is inevitable, aging of the mind is optional.....

That's what I'd have thought but at 93 he's proof that you can hold back the inevitable. He's in better shape than many 40 year olds something he said did make me wonder - given his health levels and vitality do the 60 year old women see him as a dirty old man, in the way that young girls complain when they get interest from men 25 plus years older than them.

Hmmmm, I'll have to watch it tomorrow and give an opinion then, but from your description, yes, I'd say people would see him as a dirty old man laugh

Eh, at what age can we start to stop the decline uh oh

Teriffic post Sally....

Inspirational speaker, and i have to say I have a wealth of opinion on the matter of active (positive) aging, but i would be no use in any debate in my state of tiredness right now, but thanks for posting this (good to see some interesting theads coming up)....

Thanks GG and AB.
I assume that the exercise regime he has stimulates much more growth hormone than the average OAP. Conversely though - if he suffered a tumour would it would spread more prolifically than the average OAP with lowered cell renewal?
(Is there always a down side? Or is his risk of cancer reduced due to his lifestyle? Hmmm.)

Genetics play an important role.

As for Physical activity... there's a lot of counter proof that hard work and physical activity generally while keeping you healthier, also push the accelerate ageing mechanisms underneath. Supposedly when one is born there is only a set number of times your cells can repair and replenish. You go through them faster when very active. But if not active at all, you'll die of a heart attack or something. laugh

See, I keep coming across this genetics thing - but what guys like this seem to do is optimal genetic expression & that these genes can be manipulated with diet and exercise.
So - given the so many times per cell theory, then the heavy lifting/hard hill walk routines will have you live longer than the chronic cardio ones ?

Genes make the difference between winning the Olympics and only making the senior team but it's not an excuse for the obesity and resultant diabetes this guy is talking about.

But genetics plays the important role here. Look at centenarians, people over 100. The majority of their sisters and brothers also lived to extreme age. And perhaps their parents.

As for the last part, Not really sure. It was said before that a low carbohydrate diet also helps.

Here's how we test your assumptions though Sally. Pick a group of Olympic champions. Either long distance running, or sprinters. Now map out the ages they died at. You'll find they live a bit longer.... but do not come close to some families that are packed with 90+ year old deaths. I know my Granfather's Mother, and her sisters all lived well into their 90's. These were women that were born before 1900... hard times... TB, rough living, no modern medicine. And they were big barrell chested women aswell by the time they were middle aged. As he used to say to me then, 'Hard to kill a bad thing, Son'. laugh

Sure, genetics play a part but if Usain Bolt decided to sit around smoking ganga and eating goat curry and Jamaican patties all the time I'd say he'd be one fat dude ready to keel over in his mid 60's.

I think you're confusing Alzheimer's with old age.
