an aul fella said to me before that this country has gone to the dogs since we got our independence from the brits..as much as it saddens me to say he's right..we can't run our own country..greed and corruption are systemic in Ireland..least if the brits were still here we'd be much better off...men of honour and integrity that would have the countries best interest at heart..instead we have gangsters that dress up in suits..Rob us blind and tell us what we want to hear..scum

Because the people of Ireland voted them in, time and time again, knowing that is was a jobs for the boys, pay yourselves stupid amounts culture. Even when the politicians were up in front of the tribunals, people still gave them their vote, even when they were accused of corruption, the people still voted them in. Even when there were dire warnings of economic instability in the country, warnings that the banks had engaged in reckless business practices, the people still voted in the same old same old, time and time again.

And now, those same people are complaining about corruption, gross economic mismanagement and the general state of the body politic in Ireland.

Before the people blame everyone else, they might want to take a look at their own foolishness first.

Totally true, jobs for the boys and you scratch my back and I will scratch yours. We play along with the system and get little favours, the old planning permission after the job is completed, or any chance of a grant for that. Multi millionaire farmers claiming subsidies and grants and helped out with non payment of tax and VAT, shure it is how the country works. We know the local TD is a good man to get things done for us, and that is why we continue to vote them in.

A great little country altogether.thumbs up

Yeap....great fellas altogether...as long as the TD fixes the potholes, even though you have no job to drive to, as long as they get you the medical card, even though they just voted in the Dail to cut medical card funding, as long as they help you get the passport so you can then emigrate....sure what does it matter that the economy is in the toilet, people are creaming off charitable funds, and penalty points are being wiped for those in the know....sure our TD got a speed bump put in....great fella that they are.

I don't agree that the ordinary person on the street is to blame and had a great time. The Boom was a particular section of society, mainly Developers , Bankers, and the Corrupt TDs, Government who took the Cheques and brown paper bags plus the Councillors who allowed badly built apartments and shoddy houses to be built on flood plains.
The majority of people paid their taxes and were inundated by Banks to take out a loan for a bigger car, house etc.,
All we needed to do was look at U.S. and look at Iraq and the depleting oil reserves in U.S. to see a burst in the bubble was nigh!! Booms don't last. Now we have a horrible situation where we have a 3rd world Health service for those who can't afford to pay, we have people who bought houses in negative equity and we now have a new 'underclass' who are claiming Dole and childrens allowance and everything else to boot and doing work 5 days a week as the Black Economy reigns in this type of society where there is no incentive to be honest.
We should have dumped the Euro and gone back to the Punt. Look at how well Britain is doing.
