What do you think? spotted this surfing the news, I never knew that some of these wind turbines can be 180m or 590 ft high wow thumbs down

They make sense to harness the energy of the wind - but do we have to vandalise the countryside?? blues

People want renewable sustainable energy, but not wind turbines on their doors steps, they want a modern electricity network, but not pylons near them, they want cheaper electricity, but then want the most expensive way to deliver it.

People don't want rubbish tips near them, but don't want incinerators either, they want better prisons, but not the high walls blocking out their light, they want flood defences for rivers, but complain about the look of concrete barriers.

People want it all, as long as they don't have to hear, see or smell it....or most importantly...pay for it.

the idea is great yes..harness the wind..its renewable energy and sure we've wind in abundance in this country..I dont know if I'd like 1 beside my house..I've heard they cast a flickering shadow on the surrounding countryside houses included..it may not seem much but try living with that for a few months and you'll be driven crazy also they supposedly emit a low humming noise..doesn't seem much but again try living with that for a few months and see how you feel..i suppose its just a case of getting used to it ireland

Hi, I live on the East Coast [Dublin south] plenty of wind up here where I live in Sandyford [near the mountains] but alot of TDs living here too and perhaps it would ruin their vista from their large garden rooms ? and there is that whining hum that people living beside them [within any type of close proximity] have been complaining about, seemingly it does get to you after a while. I would prefer it to Nuclear and by God this is a wet, windy country.
I just hope they don't put a rash of them in scenic spots. I would keep an eye on Tipperary, its a lovely part of Ireland, Kerry,West Cork etc.,

thumbs up

If a higher percentage of energy should be created through renewable energy, wind turbines has to be built somewhere.

A "safe" distance not to disturb residents etc. should be implemented though.

All things creating energy have their downsides - let it be wind turbines, anaerobic digesters, power stations or (in other countries) coal fired or nuclear power plants.

GalwayGuy35: There's an ould fella around here who powers all his electricity needs with a small wind turbine at the back of his place, not sure how it works exactly but he has it for the last 30 years and he can't understand how more people don't do this.

Planning permission maybe.

I've heard that they will become more common from now on as the technology is improving all the time.

I don't know that the rates are here, but I'd not be surprised if them wind turbines have to get a big subsidy from the government to run. We pay dearly for reaching our EU renewable targets. For me, it's a bitter sweet thing.

No i think they look majestic and whisper "We are heat givers, we charge your phone, we light up the darkness, some day we will even power your car and we do all this without polluting mother earth :)"

The bigger question is where is Ireland going to get it's energy in the future. I would prefer wind turbines to fracking.

I went to visit a big turbine and didn't notice any sound until I was standing right under it and then it was just a low wushing sound of the wind on the rotor. There was no hum from it. Then I realised that the anti wind people just seem to be good activists but are just confusing people with dubious information. So I suggest you visit a wind turbine of wind farm for yourself and make up your own mind.

Orien3 Thanks for that comment, I have watched a programme where a woman was giving out about wind turbines in an adjacent field. She kept on about the hum. The programme was on the the RTE stations [could have been Ear to the Ground] anyway.... like you have just said, there are bound to be vested interests. I would indeed be interested [and will arrange] to go and see these turbines for myself. Ive only seen them from Cars. This woman was really agitated by the 'incessant humming'. Some people are v sensitive to noise but if I can live with the noise from my Fridge/Freezer [which gets on alot of peoples nerves] and ticking clocks around my cottage, I think its a small price to pay for being kinder to Mother Earth.

I think nuclear power is the way to go. Ironically it's the most environmentally friendly and clean form of energy.

I think that people who live near motorways hear much more noise with the traffic and there is nobody complaining (that I'm aware of).

Motorways wouldn't be busy at night though, when people want to sleep?

Ireland may is too small for nuclear and we would have to import all the fuel. It may emit no greenhouse gases but there are radioactive emissions. I think I would prefer to live beside a wind farm than a nuclear station because with a wind farm what you see is what you get.
