MarsMan: Most home remedies for flues and colds don't boost your immune system at all, they merely help fight infections head on. Honey soothes the throat and has antiseptic properties, ginger helps clear the sinuses and lemon helps clean out the liver and has antibacterial and antiviral properties.

I am afraid the best way to maintain a healthy immune system long term is to maintain a healthy or healthier lifestyle, such as diet, exercise, and all those other really tedious boring healthy things to keep the system balanced.
thumbs up

anniebaby: honey is actually very good for you, it's just when that was posted it got me thinking
Well in comparison to sugar honey would be better but in regards to nutrition with honey there isent really anything medicinally, but yep honey is better than sugar.

I find cod liver oil great as well as mentioned earlier but in capsule form...I make myself eat fruit and veg everyday whether I feel like it or not and haven't been sick this winter which is the first in years...

cod liver oil

That's what I used to think too. I put about an inch of fruit juice in a galss and stirr in the two teaspoons of oil. It doens't mix with the juice but if you whisk it up and shoot it back it harldy tastes at all. It's great stuff and worth the effort.

I used to take the caps too Jenny but shooting the oil is ok when you get the knack and it's about a tenth of the price, plus you're not eating all that glycerine.

I haven't had a cold or flu since I started taking it in 2008 and I usually had one or two a year before that. I can't say for sure it's the oil but I feel it is.

Ah I know your much better off taking it in its natural form...I just remember when we were kids our mother giving it to us on the spoon and it wasn't in anyway pleasant and guess that stuck in my head...

anniebaby: Was just here looking up different things to boost an immune system. I have a ridiculously low immune system and need to boots it.

SDB posted other night about taking honey, ginger and lemon with hot water to help with a flu which got me thinking.
Anyone else got any home remedy's or boosts
Drinking water after eating good food is meant to be a bad idea which flushes out all the vitamins also drinking milk after a meal stops absorbtion of vitamins into the system, stress is a major part of a low immune system, lots of stress on C.Slaugh

Hi Annie,

Have had chronic fatigue & immune system issues for over 18 months. Stress finally caught up with me. I have a well-balanced diet but stress & being a sensitive soul takes it's toll on our poor adrenal glands. I was tested for a gazillion things but nothing was conclusive. In the end, through trial and error the following has worked wonders.

1. Biocare Magnesium supplement. Our soil is depleted of most minerals & while everyone harps on about Calcium it's actually Magnesium that we are most lacking. If you think you stomach may not be absorbing all the goodness you eat then use Epsom salts in the bath & Magnesium oil instead.

2. Protein (not just meat but fish, eggs, nuts, beans, seeds & tempeh) at every meal & never skip a meal. Keeping a balanced blood sugar level is key to immune health. Give up all white foods; bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, dairy & sugar. Brown bread, jacket potatoes & rice are ok (not sliced pan think Mc Cambridge's etc) but always with protein. Get rid of fried foods. Caffeine needs to go as well as alcohol if you are serious about getting better.

3. At least 8 hours of restful sleep. Take any electronics (including TV) out of your bedroom.

4. Higher Nature True Food Complex. Double the dose for the first month.

5. Fresh beetroot juice (acts as a tonic to strengthen the blood) add lemon, ginger & kale/cabbage (all juiced together). The hot drink that SDB suggested is great too (add some fresh turmeric root if you can get it for inflammation).

6. Acupuncture & reflexology. I have tried many alternative therapies but these two were by far the most effective, especially acupuncture!

7. DLUX Daily Vitamin D under the tongue spray. As someone else has mentioned, we don't get enough sun here in Ireland. A good multivitamin like Patick Holford's Optimum Nutrition Formula. Bodykind.ie is a good site for supplements.

8. Relaxing walks in nature. Any kind of light exercise is a superboost for the immune system.

9. Read "Fat Around The Middle" Awful title but address a lot of what I'm sure you must be experiencing.

10. Be kind to yourself. I know it's sounds trite but it works.

I also got York allergy tests done & eliminated the foods I had built up an intolerance to for 3 months. As I said though, I was particularly bad.

Hope this helps.
