Sometimes like with Harry Potter or Twilight, I read the books first. I was drawn into the magical worlds created by the authors and eagerly waited to see how they were transformed onto the screen. I loved seeing all the characters come to life and the hard work of the authors become real.
One the other hand, TV series like Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries I watched before reading the books. While the books are brilliant, I feel it has made me expect more from the books as the TV series are so well created.
Overall , I prefer reading the book first and then watching the film or TV series, so what about everyone else?
I prefer reading the books full stop. When we read we are drawn into the world of the characters, we build up an image of what they look like and where and how they live. Have never seen a movie that matches up to the book in fact have always been disappointed so have given up going to movies that are based on books I have read.

Films will always be different to the books, that's just the nature of things. How can you put every sentence, every scene of a 500 page book into a 90 minute film. There are bound to be creative differences between the author and the directer. What makes it interesting for me is seeing how these creative differences are worked out, seeing how the essence of the story is captured, how well or not the characters work on screen.
Sometimes I think we enjoy books so much that we expect to see everything onscreen, and that leads to disappointment.

Books to me are like cigarettes to smokers - I cannot be without one. Ever.

I agree on books being better, but haven't given up going to the movies, as I like the heading out to see a film thing.

Any thoughts on EBOOKs?
I prefer a book I can hold and turn the pages.
I'd be a book lover and have failed thus far to find a movie to match the book. This isn't a criticism in that a movie would need to be hours longer to attempt to portray much of the detail in a book.
I've read a few ebooks and have found the experience the same as reading the paper version. The big drawback though is in not being able to swap books with friends, loan a book to someone when you want to encourage them to read an author they are familiar with or to browse in a book shop...

I never quite got into this ebook thing. I like collecting books, swapping books with friends and family, spending hours in book shops
I don't really mind, sometimes you can be drawn inot a series of books you never knew existed. I never heard of 'A Song of Ice and Fire' until Game of Thrones.
I (almost) always prefer the book. I am an avid reader and cannot sleep unless I read a few chapters every night, it relaxes me. I love books, the smell, the feel, the comfort of them in bed, the stack always on the locker and floor! I will never go to the darkside (kindle ebooks) never!
Mostly the film never lives up to the book but I think Jackson nailed Lord of the Rings very very well and the films did not disappoint me at all.
Recently read a book called "Every day", a kids book about a 16 year old who wakes up in a different body every day. Always 16 but could be male or female and always in a ten mile radius. It was so different and brilliant!
There used to be a good book thread on here for readers, maybe one of you might start it up again!
Films /mini-series can be useful in getting you into reading books that you may not have thought you would enjoy, or may never have heard about, like some of the classics - Pride & Prejudice etc.
Or sometimes they just make life easier! For example I love seeing a good stage production of Shakespeare. But I would be hard pushed to actually read one (now that I don't have to do it for the Leaving Cert anymore!)
RiverSong563: I think I might begin a habit of no longer reading any books written before the 20th century. I'll just watch the films instead.
The books are always better and you'd miss out on so much. As well as Oscar Wilde, there would be the Brontes, Jane Austen, Dickens, Thackery, Edgar Allen Poe, Jules Verne and Mark Twain. I don't have a kindle...yet, and I love nothing more than browsing for hours in a bookshop. Those who love me give me book tokens
