Are the marches a celebration of the Protestant culture, or are the parades sectarian, intimidatory and designed to raise tensions?

What are your opinions on the Orange Order marches in Northern Ireland?

Feel free to discuss.

Hmm lets see, playing sectarian songs outside a Catholic Church, marching down Nationalist areas?

I'm going to take a wild guess and say designed to raise tensions

thumbs up

I wouldn't mind if they just marched in their own areas but sometimes they insist on marching in catholic ones, pure bullying.

Stanley I accept that the loyalists have their Traditions. However, the hatred and sectarianism isnot going to die down overnight. I agree, they should stay within Unionist Areas [not a hard thing to do ] but they seem to delight in inciting hatred. It is like rubbing salt into a wound to have them March with words that are offensive to Republicans and non loyalists. There is something very chest out and stutting like about their demeanour too that I find offensive.. it's about 'in your face' rather than a genuine rememberance of Loyalty to the Crown. ireland

Think Republicans should play the orange people at their own game, dress up as leprechauns playing fiddle music through loud speakers as the orange's march into tricoloured area's.
Maybe even a dance off if both parties are willing?dunno

I wonder what would happen if, when they marched through Catholic areas, the people came out of their houses and offered cups of tea and cakes to the marchers instead of reacting the way they do, it may calm things down.
Just a thought.

peace yay

We actually all agree on something.uh oh

Yes, in my opinion, it is sectarian, triumphalism, sticking their chest out and bullying, and worse of all, in 2014, these narrow minded bigots are still allowed to do it.confused

All anyone has to do is goto Google Maps and search for Twadell Ave and follow the Crumlin Road until you come to Ballysillan Presbyerian Road..Now in front of the Church there is a road called Glenside park..

The proposed route by GARC (Greater Ardoyne Residents Collective) is once the march reaches the church at Ballysillan they walk down Glenside Park until it reaches ForthRiver Road that runs parallel to the Crumlin Road/Dales and walk down Forthriver Road which goes through a 100% protestant area and doesn't offend anyone until they reach the Ballygomartin Road walk through Woodvale Park until it reaches the Woodvale Road/Shankill Road and continue their march...

There is a viable route that goes through Loyalist areas that offends no one....

The practise of parades, in which a formerly dominant group, celebrate that domination, the widespread discrimination, and the oppression of another group in a multicultural society should not be allowed to happen.

Now they haven't been allowed to bully the parades commission into allowing them to jeer and sneer through the nationalist Ardoyne area, the narrow minded Bigots will be out in force rioting and wrecking the place.

The parades should be stopped and those horrible bonfires too.

Ban the bigots.

I hope they (Loyalists) come out in force again and embarrass themselves again.. They (OO) are a PR walking disaster. They a loyal to themselves not the crown they claim to support.. and they hate the PSNI more than Republicans do..

I have to admit really enjoying watching them march up to the barriers with their drums and bowler hats, and the funniest part is, they do not realising what pathetic idiots they look like to the outside world. laugh

That's exactly it Stan.. They still haven't copped on that everyone else is laughing at them. It's good comedy. Almost as funny as Stormont where today the PUL-ers walked out in huff again.. Talk about a bunch of patsy's..

The Gay Pride march in Dublin on Saturday was far more threatening than any Orange Order march.
