Just been announced that Garth Brooks has cancelled all five concerts following Dublin City council's decision to only allow three.

Well done Dublin City Council, 400,000 fans disappointed, the GAA lose out on a cash bonus that would have been used to fund gaelic games throughout the country, small businesses in Dublin lose out on millions of euro, not to mention the revenue lost for the exchequer.

What a great little country we live in. doh

The problem with what is happening is much more than just 50 million lost revenue. Irish venues compete with other venues around Europe for the best music performers to come here. Garth Brooks choose Ireland as the kick-off to his comeback. It generates quite a stir in the music industry in the US and around the world. While people might say that this doesn't damage our reputation, it does.
Quite a few people have commented that the GAA are greedy and that Croke Park should look to the costs for the residents. The residents might also look at the benefits Croke Park offers the residents. They create massive business and jobs in this area. The GAA support many parishes around Dublin and Ireland with the money for their games. The use of Croke Park is central to this. So this year there was 8 concerts planned. 2 on work nights. And the level of mitigation the promoters use mean there will be very little disruption past 11-12 on these nights. For 2 nights in the year. The GAA should turn back and start looking inward again. It should pull its support for the RWC and other events the government and the DCC ask for. It was all OK when the football and rugby teams needed a home. It was all OK when the Special Olympics needed a venue. What damage has this done to Ireland's bid for the RWC? The GAA should follow Brooks and completely pull out. A greedy organisation???
We complain when the government make cuts to public services. The exchequer would have benefited up to 10 million minimum from these concerts. So next time people start complaining about cuts and greedy businesses, etc they should really look at it in context.
Pathetic and short-sighted decision of DCC...it is these events that keep cities alive...

An example of this planning, government involvement nonsense damaging people's livelihoods was the planned "Super Casino and resort" in Tipperary. It would have been the biggest venue of its kind in Europe and was dubbed "the Las Vegas of Europe". There was controversy about this from the start. The residents complained about "noise",etc. It was a rural area. Ecologists complained about the development. And Alan Shatter shot it down on gambling grounds. Even businessmen said it was impossible. This would have created 1000 jobs during construction and 1500-3500 jobs when completed. It would have offered a starting point for a vision of something bigger. Tourism would have been boosted. The possibility for international poker events, business events, etc would have been enormous. This would have been situated in one of the country's unemployment black spots.
But good old Paddy failed to see this....Bad, bad business..must not leave them pesky entrepreneurs mess up our defined social structure...the one with all the bitter old men at the top who don't like to see others succeed. How dare we try to better ourselves and our society? The bitter old Irish people will show us whose boss. We will take on these businesses and then go back to living our privileged lives while the majority suffer...We will be the centre of attention in our parishes.
The sooner this type of bitter old Irish person dies off, the better...I don't hold out hope though...sad flower

stanley8m: Well at least we know the calibre of people who are complaining. Garth should arrange a truck load of Dutch Gold and batter burgers for the residents.

Originally it was 1 night, to be filmed as part of a comeback documentary. Demand for tickets were such that a 2nd and 3rd night added, then 2 more, pure greed.

The dogs on the street knew that there was a limit to the number of concerts allowed be held there in any one year and that this number had been reached.

Shame on Brooks and Aitkens for letting the people who got tickets for the allowed 3 nights down.

On top of this, the idea of a legal agreement between the residents and the GAA must be called into question. If this agreement existed, why wasn't it put forward at the objection stage of the planning process. I sense more spin here.

Dublin City Council has also confirmed that while the GAA headquarters is permitted to host three concerts per year through the 1993 planning permission granted during its redevelopment, additional concerts must be sought through a public event licence. Is this the agreement Eamonn O Brien is talking about? This is not an legally binding agreement between residents and the GAA. By the way, Anthony Fay, Brian Duff's solicitor just happens to be the Croke Park Streets Committee solicitor also. He says he knew nothing of the supposed "payment" of 15,000 and a suit to his other client, Brian Duff.

If we just go back to the objections part of the planning process. Gardaí have launched a probe due to possible forged signatures on some of the submissions made to the council objecting to the event.

The bitterness of Paddy..... sad flower
