Peach I understand where you are coming from and I have more empathy than most of the posters for anyone who finds themselves homeless... I've been there before..

But there are prats like the west Brit who mock anyone who found/finds out they are sleeping rough through no fault of there own..

Maybe some of the posters should put 10 euro in their pocket, take a sleeping bag and try to survive one week on the streets...

Then and only then will they have any idea of what it's like... DON'T DO IT IN YOUR OWN TOWN... try to do it in a town where you don't know anyone..

The homeless numbers in cork alone (living rough on the streets) has gone up 500 % in the last 5 years.....where are our politicians to be found during this national shaming?....
Homeless people are not vote catchers, they are on the fringe of society, its not until someone dies withing earshot of parliament buildings that it becomes news....
Six weeks from now it will all be forgotten about.....apart from those living the life and those struggling to help....
Support the Simon community this christmas and beyond, get involved in breaking the cycle....

had to laugh how the archbishop of Dublin offered shelter for 30 or 40 well suppose its a short term solution, but in all fairness the homeless man was offered shelter, you can bring a horse to water but you cant make him drink it ,dont know the mans story we all have our crosses to bear ,but sad in this day and age in one of the most developing cities in Europe ireland

People of all walks of life have found themselves homeless,

Some people don't want to fill out forms and give personal details they may not want family or whoever to trace them, some might not know how to fill out a form or maybe so deep in addiction or mental illness that they fall through the net,

There are reasons why some homeless people are not able to maintain themselves if given accommodation, and the only life they now is the street because they have been left that way gone unnoticed for half their lives,

Yes you are right Phoenix ,,things like socks, shoes, sleeping bag,,the basics.

I don't need to go to Dublin to see homeless people, there are plenty in my own town,

Only this evening in a local supermarket ,I spotted a man and his appearance was rough but he was not drunk or anything,

He was just looking at things in the isles and I just knew he had gone inside to get some heat,

It's made me spare more thought for people in need rather than my own needs and wants,

As you said a sleeping bag even could mean the difference for a person to stay alive,

thumbs up

Great post...

I've went into shops, libraries all sorts of places just to keep warm, pass the time...Most of the heads I met on the streets weren't junkies, piss heads or any thing close... Simply fate dealt them (me) a bad hand...I've stood in line at soup kitchen for a cup of soup because it was the only hot thing in my belly that day (s)...

Some of you should try it for a day or three (go homeless) you'll always have a home to go to and not eat for a day or three, no shower, no money... Try it...

Most don't have the balls...You all like your home comforts, wifi, bed with a duvet....

One sleeping bag, 10 euro in your pocket in a town with no friends...and come back next week and tell me how you look at life..

(the you isn't directed a you peach, just a general term)..........

To be honest if I was just to sleep in a sleeping bag in the house I think I'd be blue with the cold as its icey outside,

So I dread to think whats it's like sleeping rough on the streets,,

Is it any wonder people drink to keep warm and help them forget the misery and if left on the streets I can well understand how one falls into addiction,,

It's compassion and an understanding and practical help people need,

I agree with some of the above but when you have people like Angela Kerins in charge of a charity and on a salary of 240,000 euro the Irish public are becoming very hesitant about donating to any charities

Well you know more than any of us on here what it's like pheonix and no indeed not that every homeless person has an addiction or has ran away from a bad home,..

The people on the street are the teacher, the doctor, mother, father, sister, brother of ,

Daughter ,son, and derseve the same respect as anyone with a roof over their head ,

A wise person will say that could be me, it's like a person that asks themselves why did I have to get a terminal illness ,and the wise person will say well why not me,

There are still thousands of unoccupied houses all over the country in ghost estates, and empty factory buildings, warehouses, boarded up shops and shut down factories, honestly with a bit of work, decent humanity and planning there should be nobody homeless in this country.

Good thread Peach.

The men that find themselves in a hostel after being on the street are the lucky ones,,

A group of men from the hostel got together and have gone into business,

Some are highly skilled and another is a very talented carpenter,

One of the men who has tatooes all on his face was looked down on as dirt when on the street,

How ironic it is now people are respecting him and looking up to him now he is business and successful.
