Of course what makes people content, that goes without saying. What I question is whether we have a preconception due to romantic ideals. I am pretty certain many would judge a couple that sleeps apart as less 'close' overall, but how scientific is that judgement?
Not sure whether studies have been undertaken that have been able to come up with trustworthy numbers. Statistics of separations, looking at whether more couples split sharing sleep space or finding rest apart
From hearsay (non-empirical evidence ) I know that lots of Scandinavians have their own beds/rooms within a marriage. For convenience and practical purposes.
Maybe comparing their divorce rates to others in western societies where sharing a marital bed is the norm, would help in your statistical analysis.
