The Town of Whittier - remarkably unusual!

I am generally an isolationist, but that's more to do with that I feel community these days does not work well anymore. Whittier though sounds quite amazing and a place even my lone wolf self could see itself enjoying togetherness once again.

Maybe it's the extremes the location forces upon this specific community, which enable me to imagine that I could live there too? Dunno, just sort of sounds great to me :)

Could you see yourself living 'under one roof' as the people of Whittier do?
Does reading through these articles make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, or rather 'heck no way!'

I could live in a commune-type environment, as long as I had somewhere private to retreat to when I've had enough - I like my own space, too.

But I quite like the idea of a communal living area that you can meander down to if you're in the mood for company.

Best times I ever had were flat- and house-sharing times in Cape Town - the parties, the laughs, and could then disappear to my bedroom without having to accommodate anyone else's needs :-)

[I also didn't read the article]

Everyone happy bathing naked in the stream ,,collecting wood from the Forrest and making little daisy chains and drinking dandeline wine,

Warning ,,,do not step outside of the commune .

Be at your own risk .

@ anna and heno

The article speaks of a real town which lies in Alaska. Weather there is of course extreme, snow and very very cold. In the 1950s (think it was 50s) a military base was build there, comprising mainly of 2 very large buildings. One of them is not in use and derilict, but the other building this town has taken on. It's made of lots of apartments, but it also houses the police station, the church, the convenient stores (2 as far as I recall). The school is connected to the building via a tunnel, so children don't have to brave the cold, and the building also has playgrounds inside. It basically provides everything, from living to other needs the 'town' has. The community is not huge obviously, only 200 and a bit people, but when I read through it and looked at the pictures, I could not help get a warm feeling inside. It sounds like the kind of community I could actually live in. They are very close knit it seems, and they run this project together. Can't compare it to some city apartment block. This sounds to me more like the type of village that in the past existed, people looking out for each other, knowing each other, no secrets, life flows naturally.

Would like figures for their crime statistics. Would be interesting to see how busy that police station is, or whether it's basically the most boring policing job ever laugh

@ Mauss
hahaha, yes, that would be my usual reaction too, but for some weird reason.. not in this specific case dunno

LOL peach, yeah, the stepping outside seems to be the biggest problem there, rest sounds rather 'peachy' laugh

The 'cult leader' seems to be a priest, community is mainly catholic tongue

No, but I doubt their 'cult leader' will be a daddy any time soon. Hiding that in such a small community, I'd imagine could prove difficult laugh

And I am no church goer either, I am Iluvatarian snooty

There's guys that work on oil rigs in the North Sea. They are divers that maintain the underwater engineering. They LIVE in a pressurized container for a month (diving 6 hours at a time)

For the right price. They are paid a fortune!

There are some things money can't buy, me spending a month in a pressurized container would definitely be one of them uh oh

Gamed with an oil rigger in the past. One of the kindest guys I have ever met. He was slowly going blind due to diabetes he had developed. Terrible fate.

Our house in England was hit by a small tornado. Uprooted the tree at front and send some tiles flying. No other house was hit, we were pretty special grin Was the only one awake when it happened. One of the most amazing sounds and feelings I have ever experienced. Some deep roaring, extremely powerful, seemed to vibrate through every fiber of my being thumbs up
