It's a ridiculous concept, but let's put hypothesis as follows:

Say a woman's uterus only works/conceives if she is of good moral character, with a kind heart and giving nature.

Say a non-decent kind of woman badly wants to have kids.

Surely that would encourage change in her behaviour, and she'd only conceive once she achieved the "green light"...

Tis true, my dog costs me 20 quid a year for the privilege of sleeping on my bed.

Lol, on a side note I had a cat sleeping on my bed a couple of nights lately, drove me mad as every time I moved my legs it seemed to wake the cat and that woke me, couldn't stand it. Tried to put the chap on an air bed in the corner of the room but would it stay there?......

Bringing a child up is the most important thing any person can ever do,.......has to be some minimum standards involved.

Did it puncture the airbed? laugh

My dog follows me everywhere, literally. If I go to the loo, she's waiting right outside the door, or tossing her ball at it if I take too long lol.

She sleeps on my bed, at the bottom, but only because there's no one else in it. If I was involved, she'd be back downstairs.

Agreed. I am so proud of my daughter. She is just about to turn 21, and when she meets someone new, she shakes hands and has the manners of a lady. She does me proud.

I always told her first impressions count; so I made sure she never used text talk, speaks properly, and has respect, especially for her elders.

Go me! So proud of who she's turned out to be.

It makes me proud to know I have contributed a worthy individual to society, looking at all the bad 'uns out there.

And like finds like - she has the most amazing partner, they have just had beautiful baby Ava (22 Dec) and made me into a delighted Nana.

Some kids just settle down faster than others - and she couldn't be a prouder mother. I will say this though - she is now, for the first time, seeing things from a different perspective.

We argued so much during her teen years when she wanted tattoos, piercings, etc.

So I asked her - why don't you have Ava tattoo'd? Perhaps pierce her bellybutton? She was horrified, lol.

snowlynx: Yes I suppose, but in America don't they hold parents to account about how they look after their kids more than they do here.

Ach snow you is just trying to water down heno's theory.

I have been told I am now a Gilf snooty snooty snooty lol

Ah it's an honour and a privilege to be called Nana. Some people don't have the chance to experience children, let alone grandchildren. I am as proud as punch, she is a dote.

If you try and adopt a child, then you are put through rigorous interviews, and assessments, before you stand any chance of being granted a child to care for. You can even be deemed too old, or not be a financially viable candidate.

I just think it's a shame that we don't have stricter rules with our own kids. Life is precious, and it's only when you gaze at the face of a newborn that you realise how pure and innocent they are - it's people that destroy people.

I know it's a ridiculous theory, but it's a pity it isn't possible.

In China, they have a one-child policy; even something as simple as this would surely curb some of our problems.

The term "one-child" is inexact as the policy allows many exceptions and ethnic minorities are exempt. In 2007, 36% of China's population was subject to a strict one-child restriction; an additional 53% was allowed to have a second child if the first was a girl. The policy is enforced at the provincial level through fines that are imposed based on the income of the family and other factors.

clinical and psychological testing to prove suitability for parenthood....a good idea...
also, financial assessment to see parents can support kids, and not leave it to the state to be a bottomless pit of benefits...

I would prefer to see a poor mother who loves her kids, than a rich one who only has them as an accessory

Why is it any topic on kids almost always ends with some degree of cost analysis.

freeman65: Been all evening trying to say just that

My daughter has just had her first - in the UK. The supervision she got throughout her pregnancy was phenomenal, from regular home visits to clinic appointments and scans.

During the birth, the midwives were nothing short of exceptional, and celebrated with us as if family.

Thereafter, she has had numerous home visits and check ups on the NHS. Fantastic support structure there.

BUT - I would agree with JJ - they don't "teach" anything after baby is born. And a new mother is always going to be ignorant and nervous to a point.

She's flying now, a natural, but then again, my daughter is a smartie pants. There are less educated women out there who just don't have a clue - and never learn it either.

You have to have lessons to drive, or do anything you haven't done before - surely they could do lessons for new parents.
