As the player who nurtured the talent of young Beckham, Giggs and co of the (you will never win anything with kids)generation, I would have to say Ooh Aah, Eric Cantona.

I think it's fair to say it was Bryan Robson who "nurtured" that talent..Cantona was a clown (a very gifted one) and the armband was given to him to shut him up and stop him from leaving

Ah, so Robson was just warming up for the previous eleven or so years, during which he failed to win the league with United, and further to your point, it was all a massive coincidence, that Cantona's arrival in 92, corresponded with the beginning of United's winning streak.
Ignoring again the fact that the OP asked about number 7's.....For a true representation of the respective merits of Keane and Cantona have a look at their European performances...one had a habit of vanishing on the big nights while the other singlehandedly dragged performances from the team culminating in that famous night in Turin...

I am not diminishing the contribution of Keane's qualities of skill,drive, and determination on United's success. My point is focused on Macca's assertion that having a "Brilliant Player", is inconsequential to a teams achievements.
My knowledge of soccer is somewhat limited, however, I can testify that having Colm Cooper line out in a Gaelic football game is certainly not going to be detrimental to the teams chances of winning. Likewise, Brian O Driscoll did not impede Ireland's chances of winning games.
Therefore, I fail to comprehend how having a "brilliant player" is of no benefit in soccer. The argument defies logic.

Anyway, I am not getting into arguments on the respective merits of soccer players, as opinions are going to undoubtedly be totally subjective, and heavily influenced by culturally associative bias.
