Tragic loss of young lives and naturally we all feel sorry for the young students who lost their lives, and their loved ones.

BUT, The Irish media and the Government are really making a big issue of it, and to me, it highlights one of the greatest prejudices in Irish society, namely, Class Prejudice.

So, I would just like your opinions on this subject, say for example, if the six young people who died, were holidaymakers from Tallaght or some other working class area, would this case have received the same attention from the Government and the media?

Feel free to comment and discuss.

mollybaby: Or, we could see it as a start, to a more inclusive and egalitarian society. If we keep the momentum going.

I wish I had your optimism. For me though, it was all just a facade...Just a mickey mouse issue to keep "the great beast" content...And we all fell for it. Don't get me wrong. I support the outcome completely. But lets not wrap it up in "equality" and how our society is "equal" for everyone...sad flower

Fraya: Frankly its the nature of a beast we can only change according to how we aspire

I agree. And all our actions in this country over the last 10 years have, unfortunately, highlighted aspirations for a highly unequal society. However, we will grasp onto one small incident and "re-assure" ourselves that that we are a wonderfully equal society... And sleep well at night contented with this...

I don't believe that our society is equal at all. Far from it.

But having some form of equality in law is important. And the fact that it was a vote by the people rather than just legislation being passed by politicians was even more important than we yet know.

I think a lot has to be done, but I do see this as being an important first step.

stanley8m: Exactly, and a prime example is 400 wealthy farmers protesting at a Tesco in Naas about beef prices, chain the shopping trolleys together, intimidate the public, therefore depriving Tesco of business and depriving the public of using Tesco. No Garda intervention.

Working class people in Dublin protest against water charges, large Garda presence , arrests made.
stan do you not think paul murphy is a law onto himself never condones violence in a protest as attacking a minister car as we say if they protest they protest peacefully not resort to thuggish behaviour as yeats says we have unequal society but on a worldly scale its all over the world

God bless the sun and god bles the rain

Farmers can be such a pain

So too can a supermarket chain

They hike the price on beef

And fish.

Soon it will be just spuds again

On the dish,

Moc, my point is farmers seem to be able to do whatever they want, with the knowledge there will be no Garda intervention, whereas, other protesters are frequently assaulted, and denied the right to protest by the forces of law and order. Wealth and power seem to offer a certain degree of immunity.
