its disgraceful how some 'charities' operate. i know somebody that had to stop a direct debit to a charity as she couldnt afford it anymore. she got fairly threatening phone calls, emails and letters over the matter. disgraceful but we cant tar them all with the same brush. theres many great charities out there. all under severe pressure though.

I think that some of them take part in what can only be called "aggressive begging"...I wouldn't even look in their direction anymore with some of the carry-on I've come across from them.

The ones that grind my gears are the ones in Supermarkets at the other side of the tills that expect you to donate to them just for standing there, and they are often not even charities, but local clubs, some of which aren't even that "local," I tend to avoid going in when they are there.
As for aggressive collectors, if they are standing on a garage forecourt, that is private property, and just ask the manager, or one behind the counter who the "Mouthy one outside is slagging off their customers???" and they will soon be given their marching orders by the owners.

Some of those local clubs standing at the other side of the till depend on local support to survive. It irritates me also but I also get why they do it. I have recently suggested at a local meeting for a local cause that something more productive than just standing there may be received better.

I stopped giving to the big charities cos I have no idea how much they skim off of the top or how much goes to the people it suppose too.

There are a couple of local charities I give too, basically cos I know some of the people involved and it is all done on a voluntary basis, no salaries are taken, so I know most of the money is going where it actually should.

As for the "local," or not so "local," clubs, sorry, but I have a limit to what i can afford to give, so you want my hard earned money to pay for your thing, or so your kids can have fun, then just standing there with a smug look of entitlement on your face does not exactly float my boat.

I think most people will look at what thay are being asked to donate to. Most poeple are clued in to international charities and some national ones. Smaller communities have the advantage of knowing the who and wherefore and will act accordingly. Collectors in these situstions are giving their time which is equally valuable. As a rule they are not trained in song and dance routines to amuse so I guess its their loss if they don't float your boat.

I am not expecting a full song and dance routine, or fire works, but some of them won't even say "thank you," they just stand there expecting people to donate, and if you don't they give you some nasty looks.
I guess the real problem I have is that I have no idea where the money goes with these clubs at all, or what they are spending it on, for all I know it is going to the club bar to subsidies the booze for their members. So a little more info on where the money is going wouldn't go a miss.
