after viewing recent program about hse on rte found it totally mind boggling. One would think we had marvellous service and not the utterley disgracefull service we have.Recentely had to attend for x ray.Spent 9 hours in hospital for simple x ray.Had to repeat same information to several people. If you ask nurse a question they simply shrug their shoulders. Most of them extremely rude.Begs the question why did R T E broadcast this totally untruthfull program

Having had to spend a considerable amount of time in and out of hospitals for the last four years with different family members I have the utmost respect for doctors and nurses and the job they do, anyone I encountered have always been polite and have gone above and beyond their call of duty, however, having had to watch a close family member lying on a trolley for hours waiting for a bed, waiting months for crucial scans due to lack of medical equipment and resources, shortages of staff etc. my blame alone lies with the Government.

Can't make a comparison with hospitals in the rest of Europe as luckily haven't had to need to.

Ranked 16th in Europe and 19th in the world according to this.

I guess it depends on one's history and experiences. I have had some great experiences dealing with their staff recently and found them extremely friendly and helpful.

I use the Beacon and find the hospital staff brilliant, no waiting around, really friendly, thoroughly efficient and rather like a good quality hotel to stay in.

...

The second part of the link, Euro health consumer index

For patient rights and information, Ireland ranking is 30th out of 37 European countries
For accessibility (waiting times for treatment), Ireland ranking is 35th out of 37 European countries

I'm glad I'm not a pregnant person in Ireland since a pregnant person in Ireland has no right to informed consent and informed refusal.
Any other non pregnant person in Ireland is protected to make an informed decision.
A pregnant person has their rights removed.
If I have the choice I rather not be ill in Ireland and if I have the time I would move country first

Yes agree with some comments. If one can afford private health care.Often think that mr kenny and mr martin trying to turn our country into a mini united states where if you cat pay you do without. This also very obvious in housing where landlords property rights appear to come before rights of citizens.irish freedom appears to just replacing english rulers with equally uncaring irish rulersyay

You are quite right, if you can provide private health care ,
you get the best of care, but not everyone can.
Most of my needs for hospital were in Uk and with health cover i
had private hospitals,,, more like 5 * hotels, but i have to say ,the Surgeons were very nice, one told me that if i needed to call him during the night at any time, not to hesitate, couldn't imagine one saying that here. I didn't have any problems with hospitals here though.

I also think in emergencies, people that need urgent care get it???

The government imposed a charge on medical card users for medicines and they are now supplying generic medicines to them in place of more the costly brands all of which would come under pharmacy charges.

metamorphic: Bottom line, once pregnant your body belongs to the state

Your body belongs to the state when you are born. You can't drive, fish, own a television or even leave the country without their say so

The SYSTEM is a disaster.

I have private insurance and the doctor and nurses have been good and I didn't need to wait any length of time.

But forget about prevention - you will get an appointment if someone thinks something might be wrong but not like in other countries where you simply go once or twice a year for check-ups.

Also things like physio, dental care costs a bomb here - these things are often included for free or little money in the cost of health care abroad.

I count my lucky stars that I can go to a doctor when I visit my family and get check-ups that aren't even common here. It costs me a lot of money but better save than sorry.
