Unemployment is high here, now that the economy is bust.
Where i live our unemployment is double digit.
Do your research first, before moving here.
and good luck

Give it about a year. If you have a trade you will be in a much better position. I'll let you in on a little secret, Canada is very short of skilled workers and in some cases just plain workers. Just to give you an idea of how chronic the shortage of workers is here, when the Alberta oilfields are booming, they fly workers in from Newfoundland to work the oilfields simply because there is not enough people to fill the need of jobs in Western Canada.

During boom times, which will come back, Canada actively promotes immigration to this country abroad to fill it's job needs. My suggestion would be to go to the Canadian Embassy in Ireland and start talking with them now, see what they say. Tell them what you want to do and work on building the road to here. Granted at the moment, we are hurting like the rest of the world, but when recovery comes as it surely will, with Canada being a resource based country, we will be one of the first to start recovering. Already that is starting to happen...slowly, but it is happening.

Funny thing though is that most people I meet that came here to work for a couple of years never seem to want to leave, no matter what we put them through.I worked with a guy from Britain in 1984 that came to work for a couple of years, he is still here. We can't seem to send him back and we tried. But he just kicked, screamed and carried on like some kind of lunatic when we bound and gagged him and took him to the airport. We had no choice but to let him go. So don't say I didn't warn you.

Good luck.

There's no shortage of work in Alberta or Saskatchewan, both provinces are doing very well, despite what the rest of the country is going through.
There are some fields that are a little slow at the moment, but still work available.

Just remember to pack your long underwear, you never know what the weather is like from day to day.laugh

Alberta??? ... skilled labor is suffering ... construction jobs are down. Even Ft Mac is suffering.

Imagine 71 people applying for the same job ... It's that bad. Even Temp agencies are suffering from lack of business.

I guess some of the union labour is suffering, but everyone I know is still going flat out, and I could be as well.

Ft.Mac has always been a source of steady income for everyone I know up there, they're still working, and no end in sight.

I didn't mean to make it sound as if there has been no effect on our economy, but it's not anywhere near the same as it is in other aras of the country, or the world.
Saskatchewan is experiencing a lot of growth, and there are shortages in many trades and labour there. I've been offered work there, and considered it, but their winters are just as bad as they are here in Alberta.laugh

Hi Kim

I quite agree with you. Alberta is not as bad off as the rest of the country. However, I think it is in some trades but in others, jobs have been reduced. Saskatchewan is a mystery and yes, there is work there. I've been checking it out myself however nothing in my skill field. Most from what I can see are trades, millwrights, electricians and what have you.

The bottom line though and to answer the OP, it is probably best to wait as we are all fighting over what jobs there are out there. 1000 people and a guy from Ireland all fighting over a job does lower our odds a tad. In another year we will be booming again and jobs will be everywhere!

Canada is a great country!!!

You would be very welcome...especially if you have a skill high up on the list of required workers. Truckers were being hired from England last year and the companies facilitated their entry into Canada.

Check in with a Canadian gov't office in Ireland for information.

Good luck to you!!!

There seems to be an abundance of employment here...several businesses are bringing in temporary often "non-english" speaking immigrants to work, as they cannot get enough locals to work. It is one of the most beautiful places to live in the world, I am sure. There are people living here from all over the world, some permanently. I would say, seriously consider moving up this way - take a chance, pretty good chance you will not regret it! wave

Yes, what Gordy says is true...however, if you are single and willing, there are several opportunities to live in roommate and board and room situations so that a lower wage can be manageable. It all depends upon what you want life to offer you right now. I know several people who, because they don't have the responsibilities of a kid or two, work more than one job, house sit for people who are away, so they don't need household goods or to pay rent..just playing devil's advocate here, Gord.
Gas, well the past few weeks it is cheaper here than is Sask. I know that some of the services (internet/cable) are far pricier than down south. However, I really have not noticed a raise in my grocery bill - mind you the restaurants are more expensive here!
And for me, I could always use a bit extra $, who couldn't, but I truly believe that it is more than worth it. I plan on dying here to gordy!
